Job description

Detroit Labs is a digital strategy and development partner that helps companies go from idea to implementation of solutions that improve their business. We are seeking a highly motivated Director of Business Development to drive business results by providing excellent leadership to our sales team and producing a well-managed, profitable, and growing book of business opportunities.

Business Development at Detroit Labs

As the Director of Business Development, you will lead the sales team by spearheading the creation and implementation of all sales strategies and processes, and actively supporting the team’s execution of those strategies. . You will take point on all aspects of growing revenue for the business, partner heavily with our marketing team to drive brand awareness, and work closely with our delivery, cloud, and recruiting teams to grow and maintain client relationships. You will be a trusted advisor to the executive leadership team and will create new sales initiatives, drive the team’s progress to goals, and provide expertise to drive revenue. You will report to our President and Co-Founder.

As a Director, you will be responsible for the direct management and operations of our sales team. You will provide leadership, coaching, career development, conduct annual reviews, manage and track performance, create compensation and bonus plans, and build a space for the team to do their best work that aligns with business strategy.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of senior leadership sales experience in the tech services, custom software, strategy, cloud, and/or IT space
  • Experience creating and owning sales strategies and ability to align the sales team to work towards positive growth
  • Ability to set and assess goals, monitor progress, and report performance while completing operational and day-to-day activities
  • Experience with employee lifecycle leadership: performance reviews, performance management, growth and development plans, compensation and bonus structures, team culture, and hiring
  • Ability to empathize and collaborate with a wide range of personalities and backgrounds across delivery, leadership, and client teams to build trusting relationships
  • Ability to present to large and small groups, and communicate effectively across many different types of audiences
  • Experience with strategic selling; partnering with clients on software solutions and innovative possibilities to their challenges
  • Demonstrate leadership and self-reflection around justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion
  • Ability to travel as needed for client and sales events
  • Proven track record of aggressively expanding business portfolios through strategic and proactive outreach initiatives
  • Extensive experience in developing and executing structured outreach methodologies, including effective sequencing strategies, to maximize lead generation and conversion.
  • Willingness to embrace creative, innovative, and unique sales tactics to stand out amongst competition
  • Significant experience managing complex, high-value transactions with extended sales cycles, requiring strategic planning and stakeholder engagement
  • Possesses an existing network of industry relationships to leverage for immediate sales opportunities and rapid business development

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement long and short-term sales strategies, processes, goals, and the plans to reach them to drive results and grow the organization
  • Design and implement a team-wide outreach program with goals and accountability
  • Work closely with marketing to ensure sales enablement materials and online presence supports a healthy incoming sales lead funnel
  • Provide leadership, guidance, coaching to individuals on the business development team and design processes within the team to create efficiencies and intentional career growth opportunities 
  • Conduct performance reviews, design compensation structures, and manage team functions within the business development team
  • Gather and analyze data evaluating new business opportunities and assessing potential markets, to assist executive teams in decision making and planning 
  • Collaborate with internal legal, and project teams to create contracts, proposals, sales decks, and scope work to create compelling sales pitches 
  • Collaborate with People Operations to develop a vision and growth plan for the team
  • Attend and present sales materials in client meetings 
  • Identify, develop, and sell our offerings to new and existing clients
