Metroland is looking for a web producer to post, produce, curate, enhance and social content for three Niagara digital publications: The St. Catharines Standard, The Welland Tribune and The Niagara Falls Review. This person will be part of a web hub at The Hamilton Spectator, but will work directly with the team in Niagara on content for its three sites.

Reporting to the editor-in-chief of The Hamilton Spectator and working with the editor-in-chief and editorial team in Niagara, the successful candidate will join a fast-paced web team. They will work with a group of curious and creative journalists, editors and web producers to post, curate, enhance and write stories on a variety of topics that aim to inform, enlighten, entertain and engage our growing digital audience while staying firmly connected to Metroland’s principles and commitment to quality journalism.
This web producer will:
Post, curate, enhance, produce and social content for The St. Catharines Standard, The Niagara Falls Review and The Welland Tribune, ensuring content on the sites is well positioned and fresh, and optimized based on analytics
Attend daily meetings with editors and other staff in Niagara to participate in story discussions
Leverage content produced in the Niagara newsrooms to ensure maximum page views and subscription opportunities
Use internal analytics and other tools to identify headline and curation opportunities, as well as story ideas that will resonate with readers and drive page views
Based on analytics, provide constructive feedback to editors about headlines, story follows and story performance
Enhance stories with graphics, photos, video, audio and other embeds to optimize the reader experience
Write stories that will drive traffic to the sites
Work with web producers and editors in Hamilton to share and learn best practices
Monitor news sources and social media for story ideas and trending topics.
The ideal candidate understands that a story can take on many shapes and incorporates elements including text, photography, graphics, video, audio, social embeds and in-depth interactives.

Degree or diploma in journalism or related field
Previous experience in a newspaper/media environment
Proficiency in Marfeel, Google Trends/Discover and other analytics tool
Proficiency with web page and graphics design
Ability to excel in a fast-paced, deadline driven and demanding environment
Strong communication skills both verbal and written
Passion for news, stories, new media and technology
Ability to be both proactive and collaborative
