About the organization


The Armed Conflict Location & Event Data organization (ACLED) is a disaggregated data collection, analysis, and crisis mapping institution. The ACLED team collects conflict information, conducts analysis to describe, explore, and test conflict scenarios, and makes both data and analysis open for free use by the public. ACLED’s work is regularly used to inform journalism, academic research, and public discourse on conflict, and to support practitioners and policymakers. ACLED is the highest quality and most widely used real-time data and analysis source on political violence and protest around the world.



The role


The Development Manager will join a supportive global team of remote workers and can perform their duties from any location with reliable internet service. 


This position is fully remote. The start date for this position is March 2025. This position reports to the Head of Grants and Development.

Specific roles and responsibilities


The Development Manager will be responsible for the following:


Donor & Client Relationship Management (~60%)

  • Create and implement donor and client stewardship plans to meet growth targets, cultivate long-term support, and increase revenue through upselling and pitching new products.
  • Ensure positive and productive relationships are maintained with current and potential institutional donors and clients, including multilateral organizations, civilian public sector entities, defence organizations, and intelligence agencies, among others.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for existing high-value donors and clients, ensuring consistent, timely, and transparent communication.
  • Regularly update existing donors and clients on ACLED’s activities and project progress through regular updates, meetings, and ensuring adherence to scheduled reporting requirements.
  • Tailor communications with existing donors and clients to align with their interests and priorities.
  • Maintain awareness of global donor and major client profiles and priorities, in collaboration with the Fundraising and Marketing Managers.
  • Organize and attend meetings with existing donors and clients, including both virtual and in-person events (e.g. webinars, briefings, calls-to-action, and meetings between donor and ACLED senior leadership).
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of stewardship activities (including setting and meeting KPIs), adjusting as needed to improve donor and client retention, satisfaction, and revenue growth.
  • Other related tasks as required to support the Head of Grants & Development.


Grant Coordination (~40%)

  • In close coordination with the Grant Management team and other Departments:
    • Supervise project administration, donor reporting, and monitoring and evaluation according to the agreed contracts and budgets.
    • Support the development of project work plans and their implementation to ensure project objectives are achieved and timelines are respected. 
    • Oversee the work of the Grants Management team related to:
      • New project start-up, implementation, and coordination, both within and across project teams. 
      • Project budgets, including drafting budgets at the proposal phase and managing budgets during implementation (e.g. tracking burn rates, variance, and planning spend-down). 
      • Project procurement, travel, and logistics in coordination with the Finance and Operations teams and ensure strict compliance with donor and federal regulations.
      • Risk management efforts, in collaboration with the Operations team, including creating risk assessments and developing and implementing risk mitigation measures to ensure the safety and security of project staff and partners.
      • Project close-out in coordination with the Finance team.
    • Support project teams in addressing challenges as they arise and engage in problem-solving with project staff.
    • Support on proposal development, and fundraising more generally, in collaboration with the Fundraising Manager, and Head of Grants & Development. 
    • Develop and manage a system within Salesforce for tracking deliverables and meeting indicator targets in coordination with the Impact team.
    • Ensure that all implemented activities are relevant to the mission and vision of the organization.

 

Skills and competencies


ACLED is seeking applicants who have the following skills and experience:


  • 5 years of experience supporting donor relations management.
  • Experience in account management, project management and/or fundraising and development.
  • Experience working with data, preferably related to conflict and/or political disorder.
  • Experience in developing grant proposals and budgets.
  • Experience managing donor relations.
  • Experience with pitching projects and/or products to donors/clients.
  • Experience working in the non-profit sector for an international organization.
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, or commensurate experience in a leadership position in that field.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Excellent organization and time management skills.
  • Ability to work remotely with limited supervision.
  • PRINCE2 certification is highly desirable.
