Job description

Ember is hiring an Asia Communications Manager to elevate our strategic communications work across the region, and particularly in South Asia as our organisation continues to expand internationally. We’re looking for someone with exceptional strategic communications skills, a keen eye for detail and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.  

Ember has built a strong reputation for producing clear, compelling and data-driven content that has shaped the narrative around clean electricity transition, empowered key stakeholders and influenced both direct and indirect policy changes. In this role, your work will make a tangible impact in advancing the shift towards a clean electricity system within a fast-growing and innovative organisation.  

You will work closely with and contribute to Ember’s communications team and analysts across all workstreams in Asia to help them create compelling, data-driven content and communications materials for audience groups in our target Asian countries, as we grow our team in the region and around the world. 

This position reports to the Head of Global Strategic Communications and will line manage the Asia strategic communications team.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead Ember’s communications strategy in Asia, overseeing the implementation of activities to influence decisionmakers with compelling messages through the channels they trust
  • Line manage the Asia strategic communications team, ensuring a happy and effective team
  • Monitor the media landscape, develop relationships with journalists and secure proactive and reactive top tier media coverage in target Asia-Pacific regions
  • Work with Ember’s Asia analysts to develop strategic priorities and core narratives for the region and reinforce these through all outputs
  • Work with Ember’s analysts in Asia to improve the quality and clarity of their publications and create and deliver a strategic comms plan for each launch
  • Coordinate audience and stakeholder mapping and outreach 
  • Maintain regional communications calendar and identify opportunities for engagement 
  • Maintain relationships with key organisations and networks within the region
  • Identify and deliver paid-for opportunities, including ads in top tier media and digital advertising 
  • Engage with the digital communications team to define the strategic goals for Asia and review content for our digital platforms, including social media, website and data visualisation
  • Ensure that all final Ember outputs are clear, visually engaging, proofread and in line with the organisation’s voice and style guidelines
  • Regularly collect key metrics to evaluate Ember’s reach and impact

Location:  Fully remote (Asia time zones)

Requirements

Essential

  • At least 5 years experience in a strategic communications capacity
  • Experience managing a team
  • Experience of media and policy landscape in Asia-Pacific 
  • Confidence in understanding and producing data-led and technical content, supporting experts to communicate impactfully  
  • A passion for tackling climate change and addressing energy transition challenges in Asia
  • Proactive and independent approach
  • Good organisational skills and ability to balance multiple tasks independently
  • Experience working internationally, in a global organisation or with intercultural teams

Nice to have

  • Established media contacts in the sector in our target South Asian countries
  • Asian language skills
  • Business or financial background/experience
  • Media/PR background, including experience running a press office function, and/or experience working for a think tank
  • Experience using tools like WordPress, CiviCRM and Meltwater
  • Fascination with data and data visualisation, to complement Ember’s strong Data and Dataviz teams

Benefits

Salary:  £40,365 - £48,438 with potential progression to £52,313.

Contract:  Full time (but only working 9 days every fortnight with no reduction in pay), permanent subject to a 3 month probationary period.  For employees based outside of the UK, a local payroll contract is available, dependent on the country.
