One of the leading causes of catastrophic wildfires and power outages? Trees and brush coming into contact with power lines. 

That’s where we help. At Overstory, we use AI and advanced satellite imagery to pinpoint and prioritize vegetation risks before they materialize. By giving utilities critical analysis on those risks, we’re helping prevent outages, reduce wildfire risks, and accelerate the transition to a safer, more resilient grid.

The role

Overstory is hiring a senior engineering leader to build the future of our core web product. The web product is currently three teams working on features across wildfire prevention, utility planning tools, and actionable risk insights / recommendations. Your contributions will create space for these teams to do their best work, and your leadership will inspire processes that make our systems more extensible and scalable over time. 

As a key member of Overstory’s engineering leadership team, your role will encompass building and leading a team of engineering managers, and helping to build a thriving business. You will also be responsible for working collaboratively with other cross-functional teams and leaders (sales, PM, design, customer success) to build a product that is valued by our customers and is known to set industry benchmarks.

What you’ll do
  • Lead and Empower: Drive key initiatives within the web product teams, fostering a culture of excellence and empowering engineers to excel.
  • Provide Technical Vision: Offer strategic technical guidance to ensure alignment with Overstory's long-term goals.
  • Champion Company Values: Actively embody Overstory’s core values, nurturing a positive team culture within your group and the broader organization.
  • Support Growth: Hold regular 1:1s to mentor team members, helping them grow professionally and develop their skills; take part in interviewing and hiring senior engineers and engineering managers.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner closely with design, data science, customer success, and product management teams to contribute to and drive Overstory’s product vision and strategy.
  • Enhance Organizational Design: Take a proactive approach in refining team structures and work alongside other leaders to ensure the optimal distribution of responsibilities across teams.
  • Mentor and Contribute to Leadership: Actively participate in the leadership community, offering mentorship and providing peer support to elevate team-wide performance and collaboration.
About you
  • Passionate about climate work
  • Experience working in a high growth startup/scaleup environment
  • Proven track record leading engineering teams, with 5+ years managing and developing technical leaders
  • Track record building psychological safety and transparent communication in engineering teams
  • Substantial software engineering background with expertise in lean product development and helping teams implement rapid feedback cycles, simple design, and continuous testing
  • Strategic mindset for navigating technical complexity while maintaining focus on customer impact
  • Demonstrated success scaling engineering organizations in high-growth environments
  • Track record of successful remote-first team leadership
  • You are based in the EST/ GMT/ CET time zone.

  • Experience fostering collaborative practices like pair programming and emphasizing technical excellence through test-driven development
  • Background in data-driven decision making and OKR frameworks
  • Familiarity with data processing pipelines
  • Background in computer vision or satellite imagery processing

About our team

We are a group of 64 people from all over the world. We work remotely from nine different countries and we are looking for people that are also living and working in one of these countries: United States, the Netherlands, United Kingdom, Ireland, Estonia, Portugal, France, Sweden and Canada. We meet up once a year in-person for our unforgettable team gathering event. We also offer the option to occasionally meet up for in-person collaboration.
