Job description

The Center for AI Safety (CAIS) is a leading research and advocacy organization dedicated to reducing societal-scale risks from AI. We tackle the toughest AI challenges through a combination of technical, societal, and policy solutions, working closely with our sister organization, the CAIS Action Fund.

As part of our mission, CAIS is launching a new online platform dedicated to high-quality journalism and analysis on AI’s impacts on national security, politics, and the economy. This platform will publish timely analysis of AI policy and industry developments, opinion pieces from leaders in the field, and explainers distilling key insights from cutting-edge research. Our goal is to foster a more nuanced and well-informed public conversation on AI. It aims to be accessible to a broad audience and bridge the worlds of policy, national security, and research.

We are seeking a Senior Editor to play a central role in shaping the publication’s editorial direction and ensuring that all published content meets the highest standards of clarity, accuracy, and insight. The Senior Editor will be responsible for reviewing and screening pitches, editing articles from in-house journalists and guest writers, and maintaining a steady pipeline of high-impact pieces.

This role requires a sharp editorial instinct, an ability to refine complex topics into compelling narratives, and strong collaboration skills to engage with both journalists and subject-matter experts. This position is open to both remote and on-site candidates, but to ensure seamless collaboration, applicants must be based in U.S. time zones.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Review and evaluate pitches from external contributors, selecting the most insightful and relevant pieces for publication.
  • Edit and refine articles from in-house journalists and guest contributors, ensuring clarity, coherence, and alignment with editorial standards.
  • Provide structural and substantive edits, offering detailed feedback to strengthen arguments, storytelling, and readability.
  • Ensure all content meets rigorous fact-checking and sourcing standards, working with contributors to verify claims and data.
  • Engage with a network of journalists, analysts, and thought leaders to cultivate a pipeline of high-quality submissions.
  • Work closely with external writers to develop article ideas, shape narratives, and refine arguments.
  • Maintain strong relationships with contributors, providing guidance, editorial expectations, and feedback to improve future submissions.
  • Maintain an efficient editorial workflow, ensuring articles progress smoothly from pitch to publication while meeting deadlines.
  • Collaborate with the Managing Editor to maintain an editorial calendar, ensuring a steady flow of fresh, high-quality content.
  • Work with designers and multimedia producers to integrate visuals, graphics, and interactive elements where relevant.
  • Assist in developing editorial guidelines and best practices to ensure consistency and quality across all content.

  • You'll thrive in this role if you:
  • Have a sharp editorial instinct and can quickly assess the potential of a pitch or draft, identifying compelling angles and weaknesses.
  • Excel at shaping articles to be both rigorous and engaging, helping writers refine their ideas for clarity, depth, and accessibility.
  • Are adept at working with both journalists and expert contributors, helping specialists translate complex topics into clear, compelling narratives.
  • Enjoy working with writers and contributors, offering constructive feedback that enhances their work while preserving their unique voice.
  • Are comfortable engaging with high-profile experts and thought leaders, guiding them through the editorial process while upholding quality standards.
  • Have experience managing editorial workflows, ensuring that content is produced on schedule without compromising quality.
  • Are detail-oriented and organized, keeping track of multiple drafts, revisions, and deadlines across various contributors and projects.

  • Qualifications:
  • 5+ years of experience in journalism, editing, or digital media, ideally with expertise in political analysis, technology reporting, or national security.
  • A strong understanding of technology, policy, and global affairs.
  • Exceptional editing, writing, and fact-checking skills with a keen eye for clarity, coherence, and argument structure.
  • Experience working with subject-matter experts and journalists to refine ideas and translate technical concepts for a broad audience.
  • This is a unique opportunity to shape the conversation on one of the most critical technological and geopolitical challenges of our time. If you are an experienced editor with a passion for AI policy and public-interest journalism, we’d love to hear from you.
