Position Summary:
The Senior Application Engineer is responsible for daily operations and technical support of business systems, user security, reporting functions, application development, and other applications in support of Technology Credit Union’s (Tech CU’s) requirements. The incumbent works in collaboration with management to provide support and coaching to junior staff members and to ensure that the Core System runs smoothly.
Responsibilities:
Essential Duties
- Works closely with business units to gather requirements and develop solutions for new processes, new features, and address support issues.
- Leads Episys development efforts using Symitar’s PowerOn language including: reports, On-Demand staff functions, SymConnect and SymXchange APIs, SymForms and batch FM reports. Development includes testing, training, security, audits and documentation where applicable.
- Develops in an Agile environment following Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) processes which include requirements gathering, development, unit testing, code review, deployment, monitoring, and support.
- Provides day-to-day operations and administrative support of the Episys system, and performs either the day or night production/operations cycle using SMA’s OpCon job scheduler, including rotating coverage of weekend production.
- Supports end users through the Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) framework.
- Researches issues through report generation and analysis.
- Maintains and utilizes a thorough knowledge of IBM’s AIX operating systems, Symitar SYMOP, and job control language.
- Communicates with appropriate personnel when program errors are discovered, programming changes, release updates, and new features by following appropriate change management procedures.
- Supports business systems outside of Episys which includes but is not limited to Silverlake, Synapsys, and Synergy.
- Participates in semi-annual disaster recovery testing.
- Coordinates, tests and installs annual firmware update, operating system update and semi-annual Episys release updates.
- Establishes relationships with vendors to address support issues, request new features and implement new products.
- Reviews Core Systems releases to determine impact and incorporation of enhancements.
- Understands industry regulatory and compliance impacts to business systems.
Senior Duties:
- Demonstrates leadership.
- Represents the Core Systems team with business units.
- Collaborates with IT management:
- Monitors team requests and incident queues.
- Schedules team on-call rotation.
- Coaches to motivate team to achieve individual/department goals.
Work Schedule
- Full-time; typically 40 hours/week M-F.
- Occasional overtime and rotating on-call.
- Flexibility to occasionally work early or late hours, and extended weekend hours, typically with advance notice.

Qualifications:
Education: BS/BA Degree or equivalent work experience preferred. Courses in computer systems as necessary to develop and maintain position proficiency.
Experience:
- 7+ years of experience in related disciplines, preferably with Symitar Episys system, IBM computer operations, and data base administration/management serving in a senior or managerial capacity. SMA’s OpCon job scheduler and credit union experience considered a plus.
- Strong experience with automation using SMA OpCon.
- Strong experience working in both an Agile and Waterfall software development environment.
- Experience writing shell scripts is highly desired.
- Experience using Atlassian’s Jira and Confluence to manage development process is highly desired.
- Experience supporting end users using ServiceNow is highly desired.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- In-depth understanding of Symitar Episys and IBM AIX computer operations.
- Strong track record developing with Symitar’s PowerOn for batch and on-demand processes.
- Ability to write Windows batch scripts.
- Strong understanding of different file transfer protocols including FTP, SFTP, FTPS and encryption using PGP.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Highly accurate and detail oriented.
- Understanding of web technologies including application program interface (API) specifically Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) is highly desired.
- Understanding of hypertext markup language (HTML), cascading style sheet (CSS) and Javascript is highly desired.
Licensing/Certifications: None required.
Travel: May be required to travel occasionally to Tech CU locations outside of home branch, typically with advance notice. May be required to occasionally attend offsite training, meetings or events, typically with advance notice. Overnight travel unlikely.
Typical Working Conditions: Office environment with interaction with a variety of internal and external parties. May work remotely as determined by business need and individual performance.
Equipment Used: Routinely uses standard office equipment, including computer, phone, copier and other devices.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to sit 90% of the day.
- Reading a computer screen and perform keyboarding tasks for up to 80% of the day.
- Performance of duties includes repetitive hand motion.
- Lifts items weighing 10lbs. about 5% of the time.

Pay and Benefits:
PAY AND BENEFITS
This is a grade 108 position, with a salary range from $127,200 to $184,800 with bonus potential of 15%. The anticipated range for new hires is between the low-end and midpoint of the range, depending on experience. Tech CU is a pay-for performance organization that benchmarks base pay to the 50th percentile of our market and we provide incentive-based compensation aligned with successful accomplishment of individual and corporate goals. The salary mentioned above is based on working in San Jose, CA. Salaries are based on the geographic location in which you live if working remotely.
Additionally, Tech CU provides health care benefits, life and disability insurance, 12 paid holidays and 401k with a company match; along with employee paid voluntary benefits. 7.08 Paid Time Off (PTO) hours accrue per bi-weekly paycheck (23 days per year) and will increase with length of service. Eight hours of Voluntary Time Off (VTO) are granted to full time employees annually to dedicate time to charitable organizations. Leaves of absences are available in adherence with state and federal regulations.
