POSITION OVERVIEW
Harbor Health is seeking a dynamic and experienced Lead Underwriter who will play a foundational role in building and shaping our underwriting team, processes, and culture. This is a unique opportunity to develop innovative risk solutions that enable rapid growth while maintaining profitability and ensuring compliance with state and federal regulatory requirements. In this role you will work closely with sales, actuarial, product, and other teams to align pricing strategies with market trends and business objectives.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Build Underwriting Frameworks: Design and implement underwriting strategies, guidelines, and processes to support Harbor Health’s growth objectives.
  • Develop Risk Assessment Models: Establish tools and methodologies to evaluate risk and minimize unexpected outcomes.
  • Collaborate Across Teams: Partner with Sales, Actuarial, and Product teams to align underwriting with broader company objectives and client needs.
  • Set Competitive Pricing: Develop and refine pricing strategies to balance competitiveness with profitability.
  • Lead and Mentor: Build and manage a high-performing underwriting team, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and excellence.
  • Ensure Compliance: Establish practices that adhere to state and federal regulations, ensuring integrity and transparency.
  • Drive Process Improvement: Identify opportunities to optimize workflows and enhance efficiency as the company scales.
  • Engage Stakeholders: Represent Harbor Health to clients, brokers, and other partners, communicating underwriting strategies and decisions effectively.

DESIRED PROFESSIONAL SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Risk Management, Business, Mathematics, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in medical underwriting, including developing strategies and managing complex cases.
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to assess financial risk and develop pricing strategies.
  • Leadership experience, with the ability to build and develop teams.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills.
  • Deep understanding of underwriting methodologies, funding options, and compliance requirements.
