Job description

The Coding Educator will be responsible for planning, organizing, directing, coordinating, and controlling all provider documentation audit activities and providing education to assigned medical providers to include but not limited to surgeons, physicians, advanced practice providers and behavior health specialists. Additionally, the Educator will support the R1 Coding team by serving as a subject matter expert on coding guidelines and regulations for coding requirements with specific focus in documentation and code assignment on the clinical specialties of Hospitalist Medicine, Neurology, Emergency Medicine, Telehealth, and the ability to learn and teach other specialties as needed.

The Coding Educator reports directly to: Coding Education Programs Manager.

In this role, the successful candidate will:

  • Coding Educator will audit, educate, and monitor providers and coders for E/M levels, procedures, and diagnosis coding to include CPT/ICD-10 and HCPCS.
  • Maintain accurate records of the provider and coder audits and make any recommendations for changes in policies and procedures, guidelines, and training programs. Develop and conduct provider training and maintain a positive learning experience.
  • Responsible to review, modify and optimize coding and documentation results for presentation to client providers.
  • Notify client and/or R1 leadership of continued negative coding and documentation results for providers or coders that fall below the standards outlined in the Provider Education Audit or Coding Quality Policies.
  • Coordinate effective and efficient utilization of human and physical resources such training, counseling, and optimal use of time and equipment.
  • Ensures Auditor production standards, QA requirements, and compliance with Auditing philosophies and guidelines are met.
  • Meets regularly to discuss project status with Coding Education Programs Manager.
  • Must maintain effective and consistent cooperation and communication with team and Company leadership.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all Medical Coding related material.
  • Maintain acceptable levels of attendance and punctuality as specified in company and departmental policies.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Works with Coding Leadership to administer, implement and update the coding education program for coding associates.
  • Actively works with the Director of Coding, Coding Education Programs Manager, Coding Quality Manager, Coding Operations and Analytics Manager (and/or other members of those teams) to identify areas where focused education may be needed for production coders and providers and subsequently develops the curriculum and plan for education.
  • Administers curriculum for coders and providers to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for competency.
  • Administers curriculum for newly hired coders and providers to ensure proficiency and quality meets company standards.
  • Maintains knowledge of all current coding regulatory guidelines and governmental updates and communicates those changes to current staff, providers and leadership to support appropriate, compliant coding.
  • Maintains training collateral across multiple multimedia forums so that information is organized, highly presentable and updated.
  • Provides constructive review and feedback to assist in the development of instructional materials to include course plans, objectives, and evaluation tools.

Required Qualifications:

  • This role typically requires a bachelor’s degree. In lieu of a degree, a comparable combination of education and experience (including military service) may be considered.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in auditing provider and coder education and training, or higher-level coding leadership/ management a MUST
  • Minimum of four years of experience in production coding.
  • Specialty experience: Hospitalist Medicine, Neurology, Evaluation & Management
  • Ability to interact with other employees through effective communication.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to deliver and teach complex coding concepts to large groups of coders.
  • Soft skills.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Specialty experience strongly preferred: Emergency Medicine, Telehealth, Anesthesia, Primary Care
  • AHIMA Approved ICD-10 Trainer.
  • Previous teaching experience.

For this US-based position, the base pay range is $18.69 - $39.35 per hour . Individual pay is determined by role, level, location, job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
