Job Summary
Under limited supervision and oversight, the Environmental Coordinator is responsible for coordinating the implementation of environmental compliance programs, permit requirements, and corporate environmental policies, standards, procedures and strategic environmental goals within their assigned region, plant and project scope. Responsibilities include providing training, guidance and other necessary support to business unit leadership and staff on applicable environmental requirements, identifying applicable environmental requirements associated with Company assets and projects, and coordinating with the appropriate business unit staff, Environmental Services representatives, contractors, and external parties to ensure compliance with environmental requirements.
The Environmental Coordinator should have basic understanding of some of the following environmental programs:
• Aboveground and underground storage tanks,
• Transportation of hazardous materials,
• Solid and hazardous waste management,
• Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasures,
• Wastewater, storm water, groundwater, and drinking water sampling,
reporting and control,
• Oil and chemical spill response and management,
• Air emissions monitoring, control and reporting,
• Asbestos and PCB management,
• Pollution prevention,
• Environmental site assessments, and
• Emergency planning, and community right-to-know.
Job Description
Work Designation -- remote in the Lawton/Chickasha, OK, region and based within AEP's service territory. On 6/1/2025, this remote opportunity may transition to in office when not in the field.
Based on education, experience and interview, this opportunity may be filled at either title in the Environmental Coordinator job family. For this posting, minimum requirements are stated at the lower grade. Increased expectations are at the higher grade.
Environmental Coordinator Sr. (grade 7)
Environmental Coordinator (mid-level) (grade 6) = bachelor's degree + four (4) years of experience; OR, associate's degree + six (6) years of experience
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Coordinate and implement all environmental activities and policies in the assigned region(s) to ensure compliance with environmental laws, regulations and Company policies, standards, procedures and strategic environmental goals. Assist and provide input to Environmental Services on the development of Company environmental policies and procedures. Communicate deviations appropriately.
- Provide training, instruction and assistance to others on the implementation of environmental requirements and assist in the development of environmental training materials.
- Provide support in the event of a release or discharge of a regulated substance including making agency notifications, arranging contractor support, directing cleanup efforts if necessary and completing follow-up reports with regulatory agencies.
- Promote and enforce (see something, say something, do something) safe work practices to safeguard employees, contractors, the general public, and Company facilities.
- Provide support during environmental compliance reviews, Phase I or II environmental site assessments and remediation projects.
- Coordinate the response to public inquiries regarding environmental matters.
- Develop and maintain all environmental documents and records in accordance with environmental content management standards.
- Conduct environmental reviews of regional disposal contractors and related facilities and manage contracts associated with Environmental Services.
Education requirements: associate or bachelor's degree in an environmental, science, or related discipline.
Experience: Minimum of six years of environmental experience with an associate degree or four years of environmental experience with a bachelor’s degree.
Licenses/Certifications: Valid driver’s license
Physical demand ranges from sedentary to light duty.
Must have intermediate knowledge of the programs listed in the job summary above.
Travel time ranges from 20% - 40% and will include overnight stays on occasion.
Must be available by phone after work hours and weekends; frequency is minimal.
INITIAL POSITION / BASE SALARY FUNDING: within this job title/salary grade range, approximately ($73,000 - $106,000/year).
