GM / Head of Supply
Maven is looking for a hands-on leader to recruit, support, and develop the 500+ instructors who power our platform. Together, our instructors (who are execs from Amazon, Figma, AirBnB, Stripe, OpenAI, etc.) drive over $30M in course sales and are the primary growth driver for our business. As Head of Supply, you will help grow our instructor base from 500 to 1,000s+ of instructors. You will also lead a team that manages retention and success of those instructors, and providing them with the support and community they need to grow their audience and earnings. Today, our instructors make $100K+/year teaching on Maven!
We are committed to having a small team (currently 18 total), so you need to effectively balance being a visionary and an operator, actively engaging in day-to-day tasks to keep initiatives moving forward. This role reports to the CEO, will manage a team of 3 (with opportunity to hire at least 1 more), and is on the executive team.
Role Overview
Your primary goal is to recruit and manage Maven’s instructors. These are high-powered executives with decades of experience who make $50K-$5M on Maven’s platform. You will create and execute the strategy that will scale Maven’s supply. You’ll decide which verticals to target, how to evaluate supply quality, what our acquisition system should look like and how we should expand our instructor personas. You will also manage four headcount:
- Instructor Marketing: Today we do very little outbound marketing. Collaborating with our marketing team, you’ll create a strategy to help drive instructor interest and inbound leads. Your role will include strategizing campaigns and self-serve models that make Maven a go-to choice for instructors looking to launch courses, enhancing our pipeline efficiency. There is no current headcount here, though you can hire someone in the future.
- Instructor Sales: You will own the sales operations and strategy for recruiting and onboarding high-quality instructors. This will require identifying the persona, developing an outreach strategy, and managing the team member in charge of this function. You’ll act as one of Maven’s top closers alongside the CEO, directly engaging with prospective instructors when needed to ensure the right fit.
- Instructor Success: As the leader overseeing this area, you’ll work to cultivate a community among instructors, fostering loyalty and a sense of belonging in an elite network. You’ll also guide top instructors on improving their course marketing to drive higher student engagement and retention.
- Instructor Support: You’ll oversee both customer and instructor support, ensuring we’re responsive and effective in assisting instructors, especially during onboarding. Your team will ensure that instructors feel fully supported from when they consider Maven to their course launch and beyond.
Responsibilities
- Strategy Development: Collaborate on long-term strategic initiatives for instructor growth and engagement. You'll ideate and test new models, such as themed collections, to drive supply growth and improve retention.
- Direct Engagement: Serve as a direct point of contact for instructors in pivotal moments, assisting with high-touch sales and support efforts. You should be comfortable in a “player-coach” capacity, directly working with instructors while empowering your team.
- Operational Excellence: Manage and optimize all supply-side processes. You’ll oversee inbound and outbound pipelines, refining workflows to maximize instructor engagement and success on Maven.
- Team Building: Hire and mentor talent, growing a team that may expand to 6-10 over the next couple of years. You’ll help build a strong culture of execution and strategic insight, aligning with Maven’s ethos of maintaining high-impact, lean operations.
- Executive Presence: You'll be a core part of the leadership team, which means you will have a voice in marketing, product, engineering, and business operations. You don't just manage your own function and team, but also collaborate with and influence the entire company.
What We’re Looking For
- Experience in Sales or GM Roles: You have a track record of successful high-touch sales or general management experience in a high-growth setting, ideally in education technology or marketplace businesses.
- Strategic & Operational Insight: You understand the balance between executing today and planning for tomorrow. You think ahead, spotting potential opportunities to evolve our instructor acquisition strategy and adapt as Maven grows.
- High Standard of Excellence: You set high standards for yourself and your team, ensuring every interaction and process represents Maven’s brand and quality. You maintain an A-level work ethic and look to bring others to that level.
- Hands-On Approach: Maven is lean by design. You’re a doer who isn’t afraid to get into the weeds, helping with tasks that drive the business forward, from individual instructor outreach to pipeline management. This could mean writing an instructor-facing email series, answering questions from top instructors, or getting on sales calls with our top prospects.
Details
- Compensation: Our expected offer for this role is $250K and 1%. We see that changing depending on the person we meet.
- Reporting: This role reports directly to the CEO/Co-founder and sits on Maven’s leadership team, contributing to company-wide strategy and vision.
