The Reuters Connect Platform team is responsible for building and maintaining Reuters Connect, Reuters flagship digital marketplace where customers can discover and license Reuters and Reuters partner multimedia content. Reuters Connect is comparable to Getty Images or Shutter Stock but for news content.
Our team is part of the broader Reuters News Agency engineering that develops business-critical applications and services for the Reuters news organization.
We provide publishers and broadcasters with news multimedia content (text, graphics, photos, audio, video, and graphics) via web-scale content solutions.
We’re a supportive, close-knit team following Agile, Scrum, Domain Driven Design, and CLEAN Architecture methodologies. We use modern, common, and boutique technologies like TypeScript, React, Next.JS, Clojure(Script), Python, Docker, and AWS.
Reuters is seeking an experienced Principal Engineer to serve as a technical advisor throughout project discovery and delivery as well as to oversee operations and delivery of one of our many talented Scrum teams. Working primarily on web-based applications, your mission is to scope and shape business initiatives during the planning phases as well as lead our team to deliver high-impact, scalable solutions that drive business value and enhance the customer experience. The role requires pragmatism, balancing immediate priorities against long-term vision. You’ll be responsible for ensuring the solutions your team delivers are correct, stable, modular, scalable, performant, and future forward. You‘ll work with your cross functional peers (Product, Design, & Technology) to turn ideas into scoped, cohesive, well-defined, solutions with predictable delivery timelines which you then guide your Scrum team to deliver on. To do so, you’ll lead activities such as solution ideation, strategic DDD, tactical DDD, outlining nonfunctional requirements, architecture solutioning, structuring tickets, code reviews, Scrum ceremonies, and release management.
The ideal candidate is an exceptional Front End developer with deep web development and leadership experience, well-formed opinions, an obsession with appropriate abstractions and reuse, familiarity with functional programming, and knows how to strike a balance between pragmatism and perfection.

Leadership

Early Project Phases
- Lead early project phase initiatives, working ahead of the engineering teams to ensure readiness for development
- Implement proofs of concept (POCs) to validate designs and assumptions, providing a solid foundation for the engineering teams
Technical Documentation and Strategy
- Define strategize and contribute to the front end architectural vision
- Write technical blueprints, including system design, technical specifications, implementation plans, technical roadmaps, and design documents
- Drive long-term technical vision and strategy, designing solutions that align with business objectives and desired outcomes
- Act as an advisor to senior management in your area of expertise
Delivery and Business Acumen
- Make and guide both technical and delivery decisions
- Own the technical definition and delivery of initiatives
- Partner with cross functional peers to turn ideas into scoped, cohesive, well-defined, solutions with predictable delivery timelines
- Partner with your technical peers, especially Tech leads of other Scrum teams, to ensure cohesive, well-designed solutions are delivered
- Act as a technical domain expert, consulting on application and infrastructure development projects
- Estimate work scope to help forecast delivery timelines
- Ensuring delivery deadlines & commitments are met
- Communicating risks & mitigations
- Recommend process, product, or service improvements
About You
You’re a fit for the role of Principal Engineer, if your background includes:
Qualifications and Skills
- Experience in managing or leading a software engineering team, including providing technical guidance and fostering team growth
- Experience working with non-technical partners and or stakeholders to take a software product from ideation to delivery
- Excellent communication: Ability to bridge the gap between technical and non-technical communicators as well as communicate goals, status, risks, challenges, successes, etc
- Demonstrated ability to lead a technical team from product idea through to definition and delivery
- Deep Knowledge and opinions around front end technology and architecture
- Solid understanding the front end tech stack: HTML, CSS, Javascript, Typescript, React, Next.js (or similar)
- Ability to communicate technical & architectural decisions and tradeoffs in non-technical terms
- Ability to define and implement solutions for NFRs such as Security, Reliability, Performance, Etc.
- Hands-on experience with cloud computing platforms, including a basic understanding of scalability, security, serverless architecture, and cost control concerns
- Adaptability to changing product needs to help seize business opportunities
- Experience performing code reviews, and mentoring peers
- Ability to make and use diagrams as a means of communication
- Equivalent of 10+ years of front end web development experience
- Solid understanding of the Agile / Scrum process
- Ability to operate in ambiguity (self-direct and prioritize)

Thomson Reuters complies with local laws that require upfront disclosure of the expected pay range for a position. The base compensation range varies across locations.

For any eligible US locations, unless otherwise noted, the base compensation range for this role is $116,900 - $217,100.

This role may also be eligible for an Annual Bonus based on a combination of enterprise and individual performance.
Base pay is positioned within the range based on several factors including an individual’s knowledge, skills and experience with consideration given to internal equity. Base pay is one part of a comprehensive Total Reward program which also includes flexible and supportive benefits and other wellbeing programs.
