This portfolio management role is a key member of our Portfolio/Product Management team, optimizing analytical support for the Commercial Middle Market Field organization.  

Proficiency in Excel and Power BI / Tableau are a required for consideration, while coding ability in different languages and applications is preferred (Databricks, Dataiku, SQL, R/Python).  Prior experience within the Insurance and/or Financial Services industry is strongly preferred.  

This role does not qualify for employer-sponsored work authorization.  Nationwide does not participate in the Stem OPT Extension program.

Job Description Summary

As an Analyst, you'll provide detailed data analysis in support of our Product Management team. With support and under direct supervision, you'll extract and analyze data to highlight issues requiring attention and support their resolution. We'll count on you to work on cross functional teams on projects, systems, workflows and processes.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:
  • Gathers information from multiple sources, according to company guidelines, to perform analysis. May require gathering verbal information from internal subject matter authorities or partners and data through reports or other external published or non-published electronic means.

  • Analyzes data from various business processes, including pricing, underwriting, agency management, product distribution and claims. Applies judgement, understanding and curiosity to data to develop effective recommendations. Selects the appropriate formats to explain and share data.

  • Completes assigned analysis and tasks within established time and service standards.

  • Determines necessary steps to process work. Defines data sets, data sources and assumptions needed to complete the analysis. Determines most appropriate format to display data.

  • Consults with leader and product manager regarding outcomes of analysis work and ideas. Provides support as needed to internal partners on technical issues.

  • Communicates with internal and external business partners by requesting or providing requested information.

  • Builds and strengthens relationships with peers and internal partners to support completion of ongoing assignments.

  • Participates in training classes, department and company meetings. Pursues additional education to increase technical, personal and professional knowledge and skills.

May perform other duties as assigned.

Reporting Relationships: Reports to Product Director/Manager. No direct or indirect reports.

Typical Skills and Experiences:

Education: Bachelor’s degree in insurance, actuarial science, mathematics, risk management, economics, finance, accounting, business administration or related field preferred.

License/Certification/Designation: Progress toward CPCU, AU CIC, INS ARM, Actuarial exams or similar designations preferred.

Experience: One year of experience in property and casualty insurance or related area and experience with data analysis preferred.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Working knowledge of analytical tools, basic knowledge of core business functions, best underwriting practices, performance measurement techniques and systems required. Basic knowledge of related pricing, marketing, company operations and products. Strong word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software skills. Ability to analyze data, identify underlying issues, devise alternative solutions, select most appropriate action and follow through to completion. Strong verbal and written communication skills necessary to interact with internal and external contacts. Ability to organize and present detailed analysis, information and concepts. Ability to prioritize own work/time.

Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.

Staffing exceptions to the above must be approved by the hiring manager’s leader and Human Resources Business Partner.

Nationwide pays on a geographic-specific salary structure and placement within the actual starting salary range for this position will be determined by a number of factors including the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; the scope, complexity and location of the role as well as the cost of labor in the market; and other conditions of employment. If a Sales job, Sales Incentives, based on performance goals are possible in addition to this range.

The national salary range for Analyst, Portfolio Management - P&C : $43,400.00-$89,400.00

The expected starting salary range for Analyst, Portfolio Management - P&C : $48,200.00 - $72,200.00
