The Director of Implementation and Evaluation will support the operationalization, execution, and evaluation of the American Psychological Association’s (APA) Racial Equity Action Plan (REAP), Accessibility and Inclusion Maturity Model (AIMM), and other equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) initiatives. This role will focus on ensuring the effectiveness and measurable impact of EDI efforts across the APA. The Director will work in close collaboration with internal and external partners to create and refine processes, conduct assessments, and drive continuous improvement in APA's approach to equity, inclusion, and accessibility.
This is a highly collaborative role requiring excellent relationship management, critical and systems thinking, consultation, communication, and leadership skills. At its core, the position assembles and leads cross-functional teams against discrete and outcomes-oriented efforts. The incumbent is recognized as an expert when it comes to understanding the work of APA, takes an association-wide perspective when solving complex problems, and provides technical expertise to inform priority setting.
Education and Experience Required
- Minimum educational requirement is a master’s degree or PhD in psychology, public health, sociology, or a related field with a strong preference for coursework specific to diversity, equity, inclusion.
- 10 years minimum work experience necessary specific to equity, diversity, and inclusion, and accessibility as it relates to organizational development.
- Demonstrated experience in successfully operationalizing large-scale equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives in a complex and dynamic organization.
- Strong understanding of the principles and frameworks of equity, diversity, and inclusion, including APA’s REAP and AIMM.
- Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, and data interpretation skills, with a track record of using data to drive decision-making.
- Exposure to and understanding of aspects of business that must include an EDI lens to drive strategy and desired outcomes.
- Demonstrates an awareness and sensitivity to the needs and concerns of individuals from diverse cultures, backgrounds, and orientations.
- Exceptional communication, presentation, and relationship, time, self, and project management skills; meticulous attention to detail.
- Skillful comprehension of APA strategic priorities, bylaws, and rules, and the proven ability to understand, simplify, and effectively communicate complex information.
- Strong business acumen, and the confidence to effectively interact with various levels of leadership and influence with or without positional authority.
Computer Skills Required
- Microsoft (Advanced User) with proficiency in Microsoft Suite. Experience with virtual meeting technology preferred (e.g., Zoom).
Responsibilities
- Support Senior Director positions in the EDI Executive Office to ensure cohesive execution and evaluation of EDI efforts across the organization.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align EDI efforts with APA’s strategic goals and ensure proper integration of EDI initiatives across the organization.
- Direct the evaluation plans for APA’s REAP, AIMM, and other EDI initiatives across the Association.
- Engage with APA’s internal and external partners to report on progress, solicit input, and address challenges.
- Collaborate with the Office of Communications to ensure the smooth execution of the EDI communications plan, facilitating clear and effective communication of EDI efforts to internal and external partners.
- Work with external consultants to develop and deliver training programs and materials that support the implementation of EDI frameworks, including the REAP and the AIMM.
- Provide guidance and support to APA staff and members in the application of EDI principles and tools.
- Identify and address gaps in existing EDI processes and recommend innovative solutions.
- Refine and enhance APA’s EDI tools and frameworks based on evaluation findings and evolving best practices in equity and inclusion.
- Other Duties as Assigned
- Engage in a variety of other activities, as assigned, by the Senior Director of EDI Planning and Integration that serve to promote the goals and objectives of APA, EDI, and the interests of APA staff, members, and governance.
- Some travel (<10%) may be required.
