Bioinformatician
This contractor position is for a Bioinformatics Research Scientist with strong background in computational biology, microbial genomics, metagenomics, and data science. Under general supervision, will work as part the Pharma Analytics R&D Team and perform research with a strong emphasis on the update of existing and the development of new marker sequence libraries for the identification of microbial isolates. Tasks also involve Research & Development activities such as development of computational methods and pipelines for the identification of microbial isolates and characterization of their nomenclature with. The candidate will also be expected to extend research activities to collaborations with other scientists in the team, including a full time bioinformatician and interns.
What will you do? / Job Responsibilities:
• Primary responsibility is to build, maintain, and update genomic databases using reproducible, standardized, and where applicable, automated workflows documented in SOPs. Identify improvements, troubleshoot processes, and optimize workflows. R&D activities additionally include benchmarking tools, developing quality metrics, and standardizing computational methods.
• Additional responsibilities include developing and maintaining applications for processing biological data into searchable databases.
• Ensure proper design and timely execution of development, analysis, and documentation.
• Collaborate with bench scientists to interpret data and optimize database performance.
• Work closely with scientists, bioinformaticians, developers, interns, and other stakeholders to drive project success.
• Prepare and present reports, findings, and status updates in meetings while contributing to scientific discussions.
• Train interns and staff scientists in the effective use of bioinformatics tools and methodologies.
• Maintain accurate and detailed records of database updates, workflow modifications, and laboratory activities.
• Create and update user manuals and procedures for data management and error-checking processes.
• Remain up to date with the latest developments in genomics and biological informatics. Engage with collaborators or users, and you may attend and present at scientific meetings as appropriate.

Education/Experience
MS degree with 3+ years of proven experience or PhD in bioinformatics, computational biology, statistics, computer science, or biological sciences.
• Experience in molecular biology fields such as molecular microbiology, microbial genomics and phylogenetics is required.
• Experience with sequence database retrieval and big data handling is required.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
• Understanding of taxonomic classification systems and basic phylogenetics is required.
• Proficiencies in scripting language (e.g. Perl/Python), and statistical package (e.g. R or MATLAB) is required.
• Knowledge of common sequence repositories is required.
• Knowledge of cloud computing platforms (e.g., AWS) and version control systems (e.g., Git) for collaborative development is preferred.
• Knowledge of molecular biology-based analysis (PCR, capillary electrophoresis, NGS) is preferred.
• Knowledge of machine learning models and data governance frameworks to leverage AI is preferred.
• Effective communication skills, especially for presenting scientific results, working collaboratively in a team, and documentation is required.
• Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary and geographically distributed team environment is required.
• Strong drive for problem-solving and continuous improvement, with the willingness and courage to work through obstacles is required.
