Job Description
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) Laboratory is seeking a National Security Project Manager III (PM) to create, coordinate, and track NREL’s sensitive work portfolio and laboratory-wide security capability. We are seeking a Project Manager III (PM) to create, coordinate, and track NREL’s sensitive work capability; internal and external engagements; and strategic metrics.
This position reports to the National Security Research Oversight Office Director, working closely with the Energy Security and Resilience Program Office Director and interacting closely with NREL research centers and laboratory program managers. The PM will work closely with NREL Business Managers, Financial Analysts, Project Managers and Project Controllers. The PM should be adept at facilitating interaction and collaboration with other national laboratories, academia, and industry collaborators.
Job Duties
The duties of this position are to support the NREL Energy Security and Resilience Program Office and plans for strategic growth.
Specific duties of this position include, but are not limited to:
- Establishing project plans and program budgets and reporting to funding sources with accountability for costs, timelines, and project scopes.
- Coordinate and organize lab-wide engagement with the Energy Security and Resilience Program Office including researchers, leadership, business development managers and laboratory program managers.
- Coordinate internal planning, scheduling, and progress tracking of task force working groups to support the lab in developing sensitive work capabilities, including facilities, business processes, institutional systems, policies, and procedures, while monitoring deliverables and providing reportable updates to the leadership team.
- Facilitate and track NREL’s engagement with external customers from DOE, other federal agencies and private sector.
- Plan, arrange, and host visits and meetings at NREL with sponsors, collaborators, industry and/or associations, and universities to strengthen relationships and enhance NREL’s security and resilience capabilities.
Note: This position requires a Hybrid work arrangement, including regular in-person work at NREL's South Table Mountain Campus in Golden, CO, and is not eligible for 100% remote work arrangements.

Basic Qualifications
Relevant PhD or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Master's Degree and 3 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 5 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.

Additional Required Qualifications
- Excellent interpersonal, conflict resolution, teaming, and communication skills.
- Knowledge and/or interest in energy-related and/or national security topics.
- Demonstrated project management experience.
- Experience with MS Office suite.
- Ability to achieve a goal or outcome without knowing all necessary steps in advance.
- Willingness to jump in to support team members when necessary.
- Demonstrated experience developing project plans, budgets, and reporting to relevant stakeholders.
- Ability to plan and execute meetings and in-laboratory visits with project partners and collaborators.
- Strong aptitude in building relationships and strengthening partnerships across interdisciplinary teams, both internally and across industry & national laboratories.
- Active DOE Q clearance required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with DOE and/or other federal agencies.
- Experience managing subcontracts.
- Familiarity with national laboratory environments and existing relationships with relevant stakeholders.
- Experience interfacing with enterprise-wide software applications including Oracle EPM and EBS.
- Experience with project management software, such as MS Project or similar.
- Experience with data visualization software, such as MS Power BI.
- An interest in working at a national laboratory supporting research in the national security domain.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)
Job Profile: Project Manager III / Annual Salary Range: $81,500 - $146,700
NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
