Job description

Hastings Insruance is currently looking for a Senior Casualty Claims Representative to join its Casualty Claim team! The Senior Casualty Claim Representative will investigate, evaluate, and resolve routine to moderate casualty claims within the company’s contractual and legal obligations while providing quality service and ensuring appropriate payments to our customers.
Position Location & Schedule Details
This position is flexible in its location! Candidates residing within the greater Hastings, Michigan, will be able to work a hybrid (combination of on-site and work-from-home) schedule as an alternative. Preference will also be given to candidates who reside within our five-state territory (Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, or Illinois). Hastings may consider candidates in other states to work remotely if elements of their application are strong. Generally, this role will work within our standard office hours of Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm.
Position Duties & Responsibilities
  • Manages a personal caseload of claims, which may include litigation, to ensure the proper adjudication or settlement of those claims and that they are handled according to Company policies and procedures, within the Company’s contractual and legal liability. Uses Hastings authorized software, estimating systems, and other approved technology to perform job duties.
  • Facilitates the claim process and resolves claims in a timely manner by initiating and maintaining positive and productive communications with all customers. This may include meeting with agents and large accounts to do onsite presentations.
  • Appropriately reviews and applies coverage/compensability for all claims. There should be little independent, outside coverage analysis, except that which has been approved by the Manager or Director. May provide assistance to less experienced members of the claim department when appropriate.
  • Investigates, evaluates, and settles claims within the scope of the company’s contractual and legal obligations to ensure that settlements are fair and equitable to the insured, the claimant, and the company.
  • Ensure that salvage and subrogation opportunities are identified and pursued in order to minimize claim losses and improve company results.
  • Utilizes all appropriate loss and expense savings programs and directs the activities of outside vendors to ensure that only necessary and cost-effective work is accomplished.
  • Documents all claim files accurately and thoroughly to substantiate the disposition of the claim and minimize the possibility of erroneous payments. Properly utilize and document all files in the claim system of record.
  • Establishes and maintains appropriate case reserves in an amount sufficient to fund the payment of the claim once it is resolved, whether through settlement, litigation or arbitration as soon as it can be practically done.
  • Identifies potential fraud and refers to the appropriate authority. Interaction and contact will occur with surveillance companies, independent adjusters, and special investigators.
  • Coordinates relevant claim information with Loss Control, Underwriting, Marketing, etc., to maximize the company’s effectiveness in avoiding future losses and to better manage the current business.
  • May be assigned special projects, committees, or assignments from the supervisor or manager and serve as a technical resource for other adjusters. 
Candidate Requirements & Qualifications
  •  Bachelor’s degree preferred. May consider formal insurance education and equivalent work experience.
  • Minimum of 5+ years of increasing related/applicable experience handling commercial casualty claims. 
  • Associate in Claims (AIC) Senior Claim Law Associate (SCLA) or Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) or be actively working towards a designation.
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Possess the unique ability to influence others and foster teamwork. 
  • Demonstrated critical thinking ability, decision quality, and results-based orientation. 
  • Experience in managing conflicts and sensitive situations. 
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple responsibilities and tasks. 
  • Strong customer service orientation and experience required. 
  • Actively participates in professional development, i.e. continuing education or self-improvement.
  • Other duties as assigned by leadership, either verbally or in writing.
