Brief Overview
Reporting to the Chief Medical Officer, the Director of Psychological Services is an integral member of the clinical leadership team at Amwell and Amwell Medical Group (AMG). S/he works in parallel to Medical Directors of other AMG business lines to provide daily oversight and guidance of psychological services provided by AMG therapists. The Director of Psychological services is accountable for direct supervision of the clinicians within the Therapy business line and as such works closely with the Chief Medical Officer, Quality and Clinical Services teams to support clinical quality oversight, provider advocacy, policy and guideline development, program strategy and provider remediation. The ideal candidate is a highly skilled mental health clinician experienced in collaborating in clinical, operational, and business leadership. This role is highly cross-functional in serving as a behavioral health subject matter expert across the Amwell organization.
Core Responsibilities
All AMG Clinical Directors are accountable for ensuring AMG clinicians remain in compliance with established policies, guidelines and procedures specific to the service line they oversee. In addition, they serve as advocates for provider and patient needs with our customer support, Clinical Services and Product teams. This includes assisting with the development of clinical strategy and workflow, ensuring clinical guidelines and policies are current with established standards of care and best practices, regular communication with service line clinicians on updates and needs, oversight and mentoring of AMG clinicians, as well as collaborating with key stakeholders on clinical program and product development to achieve quality outcomes. The Director of Psychological Services collaborates very closely with the Chief Medical Officer, as well as leaders on the Clinical Services team in the performance of these duties.
S/he Is Specifically Accountable For
Supervision and clinical oversight of AMG therapists, providing mentoring and remediation when needed. As such serves on the following committees:
- Behavioral Health Watch List Committees (Operational and Quality)
- AMG Legal-Clinical Oversight Committee
- AMG Credentialing Committee
- Others as needed
Leadership and assistance to the Quality and Clinical Services teams to ensure evidence-based clinical quality of care and operational compliance for therapy clinicians.
- Development and regular maintenance of therapy-specific clinical quality guidelines
- Ensure AMG policies include therapy-specific language where appropriate
- As requested by the Quality and Clinical Services teams, counsel individual clinicians on specific behaviors requiring improvement, documenting all discussions and specific improvement measures discussed
- As requested in support of the clinical Quality and Clinical Services teams provide outreach to patients with clinical complaints to assess compliance with AMG clinical guidelines and policies
Provide group mentoring on clinical and operational best practices specific to psychological services
- Moderate the therapy posts on the AMG clinician intranet/ Community Site, providing education, feedback and encouragement in a regular and timely fashion
- Be available during business hours for email or timely scheduled clinical consultation with therapists
- Partner with the Clinical Services team to generate clinical content and updates for regular provider communications and training
- Host community education and engagement activities, such as virtual peer supervision webinars, open forums, office hours, and Q&As
- Provide direct case consultation/supervision for therapists as needed
- Participate in regular clinician meetings providing a leadership voice on new product features or programs, clinical updates and best practices
Provider Engagement & Satisfaction
- Foster a clinical culture that engages and retains high quality, high performing clinicians
- Develop and implement creative strategies to foster provider engagement, connection, growth, and satisfaction
- Serve as the Voice of the therapy provider in product and operations meetings
- Provide a limited number of hours of direct patient care on a monthly basis to ensure close alignment with the provider experience
Qualifications
- Psychologist (PhD, PsyD in Clinical, Counseling or related specialty)
- 5+ years’ experience clinical program leadership, including experience in team management
- Strong interpersonal and conflict management skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent clinical skills including experience managing clinical crises, providing supervision and
- case consultation, navigating ethic and legal issues that present in mental health care
- Proactive, creative, independent, organized
- Ability to manage multiple projects and drive to deadlines
- Tech-savviness, proficiency in virtual collaboration methods, willingness to think creatively in
- utilizing technology to build connection and community
- Ability to understand and balance business needs and clinical priorities
- Eligible for credentials with Amwell Medical Group, (or currently credentialed as Therapy
- provider by Amwell Medical Group):
- Independently licensed psychologist with at least one active state license in good
- standing
- Psychologists (PsyD or PhD) must hold advanced degree from an American Psychological
- Association accredited institution
