SUMMARY: The Tool Design Programmer/Estimator is responsible for creating the technical drawings of custom cutting tools from, customer prints or sketches, and then sourcing the correct materials to form a quotation for the sales team or customer.  They will work with the customer and sales team to ensure tooling is designed correctly. They will also create the programs, approval drawings, and set-up sheets for the operation of the CNC equipment in our shop.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Personally exhibits, recruits and coaches associate’s consistent with Core Behaviors
  • Responsible for promoting culture of safety
  • Design custom Indexable, Solid Carbide, Carbide tipped and High-Speed Steel Cutting Tools utilizing one or more of the following: CAD, Walter Tool Studio, ANCA 3D Simulator and ToolDraft.
  • Communicate with customers and sales team to achieve proper tool designs.
  • Use manufacturing ERP software (JobBoss) to create quotations for the sales team and customers.
  • Make engineering changes to existing designs.
  • Create detailed approval drawings for customer and manufacturing.
  • Interpret engineering drawings and develop CNC programs. This will include using ANCA or Walter software or manually writing the program, maintaining legacy CNC programs using whichever method is required. 
  • Determining tooling/gaging requirements to manufacture parts in the most efficient manner which includes existing tooling, purchase new tooling, or developing new tooling.
  • Develop work instructions and or Setup Instructions to aid in manufacturing of parts. These instructions will be generated either during the programming task or independently as required. 
  • Trouble shoot and edit programs as needed. 
  • Respond to commonly occurring problems/situations for which standards, procedures or precedents exist.
  • Create CAD layouts and mylars as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge of material and tooling types.
  • Knowledge of the machine and its capabilities.
  • Knowledge of what the tool is and how it is used
  • CAD Design (preferred)
  • ANCA Tool Room Programming (required)
  • Walter Tool Studio Programming (preferred)
  • CNC Cutter Grinding (required)
  • Knowledge and ability to use micrometers, vernier caliper, radius gages and other video inspection equipment
  • Competent with applying math skills/tool geometry 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • No direct supervisory responsibilities

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: 

  • High School diploma or equivalent required
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in a similar position required

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

  • None required
  • CNC certificate preferred

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Good working conditions. The environment may be slightly dirty or involve occasional exposure to elements. Work is generally performed during traditional working hours; regular day hours Monday through Friday; although there may be some changes to the work schedule to include some weekends or evenings.
  • Employee is regularly required to speak and understand English, stand, walk, sit, use hand to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms. Employees are required to use computers and other equipment.
  • Employees frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities include close vision and the ability to clearly focus vision.

PPE REQUIRED:  

  • Eye protection, hearing protection, and foot protection as required.
  • Wrist rest for keyboard and mouse pad if requested
