Job Description
The purpose of this position is to spread the message of the restored Church of Jesus Christ around the world through music. Many Church messages are delivered as music via print, web, app/mobile, social media, streaming, and other delivery channels in 100+ languages.
The music publisher is a part of the Publishing Services Department (PSD) of the Church, housed specifically in the Scripture and Music Production Division on the music publishing team. This position reports to the Senior Music Publisher for the Church. The material produced, managed, and published by the music publishing team encompasses all music content for the Church. While this team does not produce any audio or video music assets, it is responsible for the stewardship of the files and publishing them in Church channels. The music publisher partners with other music engravers/publishers, asset managers, project coordinators, and project managers to provide multi-channel music design and publishing services for originating departments. Core projects include: the new Hymns collection, Youth Theme music, Magazine music, Temple dedication arrangements, and others. In addition to providing engraved sheet music, the music publisher helps curate online databases for Church music libraries, and assists with archival and restoration activities.
The ideal candidate has previous engraving experience, high music literacy, an understanding of vocal and instrumental styles of music, knowledge of music styles in print and performance globally, and a flexible, creative mind that is willing to collaborate and meet challenges head-on. Teaching experience is also an asset, because the publishing team helps clients understand how to accomplish their musical goals in media.
This is a full-time, fully-benefited position that is time-bound, with an expected end date of June 30, 2030. This position can be fully remote.
This position is a grade 93 with a starting salary range between 70K-80K, depending on experience.
Responsibilities
- 75% Design and maintain sheet music assets for the Church in all approved languages; Finale is being actively depreciated, and the team needs to migrate the active library to a new software. A lot of time will center on this migration activity while still developing the new Hymns collection in many languages.
- 15% Understand and deal with the complexities of the Church music publishing process, including the requirements for multi-channel music language production. Follow the established music publishing process for multi-channel publishing of music content.
- 5% Work within multilevel approval structures, to maintain the appropriate music quality standards for work. The publishing team is highly collaborative and dedicated to achieving client expectations in order to deliver high-quality, timely, and lasting products.
- 5% Research and test relevant industry practices and software. While the team has its own style structures for Church products, it is important for them to be aware of and be able to implement industry standard practices and innovations.
Qualifications
- B.S., B.A., or B.M. degree in music, music education, music production or related field
- Experience in music engraving demonstrated through a professional portfolio.
- Please submit 1-2 pieces that showcase your professional music engraving work. Applications that do not include a resume and portfolio will not be considered.
- Experience and fluency in music notation software (e.g. Finale, Dorico, Sibelius, etc.)
- Basic understanding of MusicXML markup language, as well as music engraving principles
- Proficiency with the Adobe suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Acrobat) desirable, but not required
- Intermediate music performance skills that involve organizing productions, leading groups, and performing professionally (Keyboard, vocal, instrumental) a big plus
- Basic understanding of publishing music in foreign languages and how they relate to the rhythm and meter of the music composition
- Ability to effectively use Microsoft suite, awareness of database software and organization; ability to write clearly and well in English
- Willingness to be part of a highly collaborative team while able to operate independently in shepherding individual responsibilities
