The Excise Returns Engineering team at Avalara is responsible for building Excise tax returns and eFiling packages. You, as a Software Engineering Manager at Avalara, will be hands-on leading a Brazilian engineering and SDET team responsible for designing and driving a highly accurate, reliable, secure and performant Returns application.

A successful candidate will be a well-rounded software development engineer with a proven track record of leading engineering teams in an Agile environment. As an engineering manager, you will be responsible for the daily management and support of the software engineers on the team including technical guidance, review and weekly 1-on-1s with the team members. You will work closely with Content and Design teams providing inputs, and a Core Platform team managing the website and engine services. We are looking for a highly skilled and motivated Engineering Manager to join our development team and manage a team of highly skilled and motivated engineers building components for our innovative tax compliance solutions.

Job Duties

  • Lead, grow, and maintain an engineering team working on an Agile Kanban team
  • Support the system design and overall software development lifecycle for a set of core roadmap items
  • Co-responsible for production website current condition monitoring and management of software deployments.
  • Implement robust error handling, data validation, and data transformation mechanisms to ensure data integrity and accuracy during integration processes
  • Optimize integration performance and scalability to accommodate a growing number of clients and increasing data volumes
  • Build and lead POCs to demonstrate technical feasibility
  • Perform code reviews and ensure coding standards and practices are followed
  • Implement and follow agile/scrum processes
  • Collaborate with other teams to solve cross functional challenges
  • Optimize code to improve application efficiency


What You'll Need To Be Successful

  • Bachelor/master's degree in computer science or equivalent
  • 7+ years of experience in software design and development, with a proven track record of successfully leading teams in building software integrations, including C# .net experience
  • 3+ years leading a software development team including technical and administrative responsibilities
  • Exceptional leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Good SQL skills and experience in SQL Server Management Studio in a multi-tenant database environment.
  • Good understanding of Object-oriented programming languages.
  • Good understanding of system architectures, APIs, data models, and authentication mechanisms.
  • Good experience with EDI, XML, JSON and other data interchange formats.
  • Experience with Xfinium PDF writer would be beneficial.
  • Experience working in an Agile team environment.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and a demonstrated ability to navigate complex technical challenges.
  • Experience of working on AWS Cloud would be beneficial.
  • Excellent analytical and troubleshooting skills to be able to solve complex problems and critical production issues.
  • Proven track record of delivering high-quality software projects on time.
