Job description

Introduction:

The Zebra, named a Best Place to Work in Austin four years running, revolutionizes how consumers research and shop for insurance. We strive to build diverse teams that feel inclusive for all. Our motto is "All Stripes Welcome," we put that into practice by valuing traditional and non-conventional backgrounds and perspectives. Our Zeebs are passionate about learning, growing, & working together to tackle exciting problems.

We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join our herd! We are looking for people who are flexible enough to contribute to our product, primarily in the back-end parts of our codebase. Projects involve streamlining/automating insurance advisor workflows to increase agency efficiency, integrating disparate systems to achieve a single view of the consumer, or creating shared libraries to generate technical wealth and improve dev experience. You must be comfortable working on experimental, rapid-prototyping projects and building long-term, sustainable, scalable solutions.

Our software engineers take projects from concept to production by collaborating with business stakeholders to understand underlying problems/needs and then iteratively developing right-sized solutions through creative problem-solving.

Location:

While we are open to remote work across the contingent US, we are still establishing our company to support work in all states! We are set up to support employees who want to be fully remote, in-office only, and a mix of the two in the states we are able to hire in.

Please note - we will not be supporting work based out of the following states: CA, MA, NY, NJ.

What You'll Do:
  • Assist in designing, implementing, and maintaining The Zebra comparison product and other products using Python, Pydantic, FastAPI, Django, NodeJS, and other modern technologies.

  • Collaborate with Cloud Ops and work on technologies within the AWS ecosystem.

  • Deliver focused, maintainable, and performant code across different areas of our business, from adding new functionality to existing cloud-hosted microservices to creating new features supporting growth into new insurance lines

  • Work closely with other engineers, designers, and engineering leadership to rapidly build, iterate, test, and deploy new features and products and maintain a high-quality robust codebase.

  • Improve and scale the existing products and tools to support our growth

  • Act as a technical leader for the team and grow other engineers through example and mentorship

What We're Looking For:

As we evaluate candidates across all roles, we look for folks who have a strong sense of ownership, great communication and collaboration skills, and a dedication to continuous improvement.

  • 7+ years of professional programming experience

  • B.A. / B.S. / M.S. or self-taught solid fundamentals in computer science

  • Technical:

    • Strong understanding of and experience with one of the following: Python, Ruby, Java, C++, C#, or Go (Python being the Zebra’s preferred language)

    • Strong experience with relational and/or NoSQL databases

    • Experience with internal and external APIs (within B2B applications)

    • Exceptional and proven web development experience

  • Behavioral:

    • Eager to take ownership of work, including collaboration with business stakeholders and fellow engineers through the product development lifecycle

    • Track record of delivering quality code in a timely fashion, understanding where to draw the line between good and flawless

    • Experience coaching and mentoring junior engineers

Experience that will Impress the Heck Out of Us:
  • Experience working in consumer-facing web products, growth-phase startups, and/or using A/B testing and data to drive product decisions

  • Experience with Python, FastAPI, Django, Tornado, AWS, Javascript, React, microservice architectures, and web API design

Interview Process:
  • Recruiter Interview: 30 minute phone call with the recruiter for the basics of your experience & role information.

  • Hiring Manager Interview: 45 minute zoom call for a more in depth deep dive of your experience both technical & behavioral question based.

  • Final Panel: 2.5 hours split into (3) panel interviews with technical exercises.

Benefits & Perks:
