Mutual of Enumclaw works exclusively with local independent agents to offer insurance products for individuals, families, farms, and businesses. We currently operate in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Arizona, Montana and Wyoming.
The Commercial Lines Field Underwriter reports to a Commercial Underwriting Manager and will be responsible for sales and underwriting for their assigned group of agents within a defined geographic territory. This role requires above average underwriting expertise and strong marketing/sales skills, handling new and renewal accounts and endorsements within designated authority level, aligned with achieving our corporate objectives. The role requires regular in-person visits to assigned agencies.
Location: The successful candidate will work remotely, but must be located in one of the following locations: Western WA/Seattle Metro, Portland Metro, or Salt Lake City Metro, be available to work during our core Pacific Standard Time (PST) business hours, and must have high-speed internet (internet speed test required).

Hiring Range: $120,500 - $130,700*
Salary Range: $120,500 - $144,400

Responsibilities:
- Agent Engagement:
- Develops and sustains strong relationships with assigned agencies through field visits and partnership with our marketing team at MOE.
- Expectations of these field visits include monitoring of agency growth, profitability, mix of business and quality submissions that are within the underwriting appetite.
- The field underwriter will evaluate and quote commercial &/or farm submissions using an above average knowledge of underwriting, paired with strong knowledge, and understanding of Mutual of Enumclaw’s appetite and growth strategy.
- Will conduct training sessions with agencies as needed.
- Prospect and Underwrite accounts $25K and above:
- The Commercial Lines Field Underwriter will apply their technical underwriting expertise and strong understanding of the underwriting appetite and philosophy to communicate our procedures, coverage interpretations, and policy and endorsement provisions to the field.
- Ability to discuss specific commercial risks and exposures and offer coverage solutions unique to the operation.
- Utilizes effective persuasion and negotiation techniques to facilitate the acceptance of underwriting decisions.
- Appropriately documents the underwriting thought process in file.
- Sales/Marketing Knowledge:
- Supports agents in their assigned territory in winning new business, retaining their renewal book, and working with the agent to identify potential new members by reviewing the agent’s current book of business and prospects in the community.
- Assists in suggesting and setting up marketing campaigns with agencies to meet mutual growth and profitability goals.
- Keeps apprised of market conditions and competitor actions and product changes.
- Collaborative:
- Partners with leadership, product management, marketing, underwriting and rating team to achieve shared corporate and territory goals.
- Actively participates in agency functions and industry events.
- May assist with training/mentoring of less experienced underwriters.
Qualifications:
Required Skills/Abilities:
- 2-3 years of current Field Underwriting experience with demonstrated success.
- Must be located in a targeted growth area and demonstrate a strong understanding of the local marketplace and insurance industry trends.
- Minimum of 6 years Commercial Multi Line Small, Middle Market and Farm underwriting experience with strong knowledge base of underwriting assessment, control analysis, rule/guideline application, rating and coverages.
- Quote and bind commercial and farm new business submission through the acceptance, modification or rejection of risks based on review of the business in terms of loss experience, inspection reports, file information, web resources, policyholder tenure, related policies and nature of risk in accordance with company guidelines and standards and state laws.
- Working knowledge of facultative reinsurance and reinsurance treaties and their impact on our business.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills .
- Strong Interpersonal skills: Experience and ability to develop and maintain strong business relationships with coworkers and agents. Strong collaborative mindset and desire to seek out solutions in complex situations.
- Excellent Time Management: Accountable for accurate and timely work product, demonstrate a sense of urgency and reliability.
- Able to work independently and function well in a high paced environment.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Education and Experience:
- 6+ years of Commercial underwriting or related business experience required.
- Farm underwriting experience preferred.
- Bachelor's degree.
- Insurance industry designation(s) and/ certification(s) preferred. CPCU, CLCS, ARM, AFIS certificates or coursework desirable.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer, including video conferencing.
- Extensive travel within assigned territory will be required; in a 50–100-mile radius
