Following its recent acquisition by SLR, Wardell Armstrong forms part of a leading global environmental and sustainability consultancy working on projects across the world from over 100 offices.  Starting as a UK business in 1994, SLR now operates as a global company with more than 3,500 people, delivering client-focused solutions across Europe, North America, Pacific Asia and Africa. Throughout this time SLR has strived to grow both organically and through welcoming other like-minded businesses, such as Wardell Armstrong, into its “One Team” of talented consultants. In doing so, its core objective is to assist clients and colleagues alike in “Making Sustainability Happen”.

About the Opportunity

We are looking for an experienced Archaeological Illustrator to join our Carlisle office on a casual basis, to assist our illustration and GIS teams with increasing workloads. The Carlisle office is one of our Archaeology and Heritage centres with a dedicated team of Archaeology staff covering all aspects of the discipline from Heritage consultancy to fieldwork and the full range of post-excavation services, including artefact and environmental specialists. The role is principally to work with the team locally but also to provide support to our other regions when required.

We offer flexible working with an option for some remote working for the right candidate. All equipment and software will be supplied to enable work in all necessary formats and media. We are ideally seeking someone skilled in both traditional and digital illustration skills. As part of the business’ wider illustration team you will receive support to develop your skills and learn new methods in order to increase our capabilities overall.

About you

The right candidate will have previous experience of working as an archaeological illustrator in a commercial setting. You will be educated to degree level in an appropriate subject or have equivalent relevant experience. You will be able to demonstrate a track record in the production of archaeological grey literature and publication graphics using traditional and digital skills. Experience of photography and the editing of images, geomatics or reconstruction artwork would also be desirable but not essential.

You will be a good communicator, able to provide advice across the team on your area of expertise. You will be comfortable with accountability, taking responsibility for your work and time management. You will be able to work independently when required as well as in collaboration with other offices, remaining professional and respectful with all your various colleagues.

Essential:

  • Good working knowledge of GIS and CAD packages, as well as the Adobe suite of software;
  • The ability, and willingness, to learn new skills and applications;
  • The ability to produce figures for grey literature reports;
  • The ability to compose and layout illustrations for publications;
  • Be able to advise project teams of the most appropriate methods to record or survey in usual or challenging circumstances;
  • Excellent attention to detail and the ability to proof the work of others is required;
  • Creative problem solving;
  • Artefact illustration to publication standard;
  • Full UK driving licence.

Desirable:

  • Experience of creating promotional materials, including online material;
  • Experience of capturing/manipulating photographs and video;
  • Experience of creating reconstruction drawings;
  • Experience of publication design, pagination and typesetting.

We offer:

  • Membership of the Firm's Group Personal Pension Plan, with Employer's contribution of up to 5%;
  • Payment of a relevant professional subscription;
  • 24 days annual leave per year;
  • Membership to the Firm's Private Health Care Scheme;
