Job description

Job Description

Join the team redefining how the world experiences design.

Servus, hey, g'day, mabuhay, kia ora, 你好, hallo, vítejte!

Thanks for stopping by. We know job hunting can be a little time consuming and you're probably keen to find out what's on offer, so we'll get straight to the point.

Where and how you can work

Our flagship campus is in Sydney, Australia but Austria is home to part of our European operations. And you have choice in where and how you work, we trust our Canvanauts to choose the balance that empowers them and their team to achieve their goals.

Fun fact, a big part of our Austrian operations is developing the AI product within Canva to help reimagine how artificial intelligence can be used in design. Pretty cool ha!

What you’d be doing in this role

As Canva scales change continues to be part of our DNA. But we like to think that's all part of the fun. So this will give you the flavour of the type of things you'll be working on when you start, but this will likely evolve.

At the moment, this role is focused on:

  • Write cutting-edge machine learning algorithms in Python to enhance Canvas design generation capabilities
  • Run training of machine learning models on a powerful cloud infrastructure with access to many GPUs
  • Optimizing your trained models to increase the quality and speed
  • Collaborate with software engineers to interface your machine learning models with the backend, ensuring smooth deployment and operational efficiency.
  • Collaborate closely with your team members and other cross-functional teams, including designers, product managers, and engineers, to ensure that our AI-driven features align with user needs and deliver an exceptional design experience.
  • Sharing your results in internal meetings and writing documentation

You're probably a match if

  • You have a strong background in machine learning with a focus on generative models and their application in creative fields. Experience with diffusion models and large language models is desirable.
  • You are proficient in Python, including Pytorch, Numpy, and Huggingface libraries. Experience with Docker, Kubernetes and Anyscale are a plus. Experience with other programming languages (Java, JavaScript, Typescript) is a plus.
  • You have a collaborative mindset with excellent communication skills and enjoy working with different teams including designers and engineers.
  • You bring curiosity and a drive for continuous learning, staying ahead of AI and design industry trends to bring fresh ideas and techniques to the team.
  • You have experience working in cloud environments, ideally AWS.
  • You have demonstrated self-motivation and ownership over complex problems and their solutions, with a strong sense of accountability.

About the team

Our team is called Design Generation EU, and we generate graphic designs with machine learning and deliver these solutions to our users. We combine research and engineering to make complex design accessible to everyone. The team consists of machine learning researchers, machine learning engineers, and backend and frontend engineers, and we need you to innovate new machine learning approaches that make graphic design for our users more accessible and faster. By developing innovative solutions, we support Canvas vision to "Empower the world to design."

As a machine learning researcher (a.k.a. applied scientist), you'll be at the heart of our mission to make advanced machine learning design tools easy for everyone. Your work will help create new features that make it simpler and more fun for Canva users to bring their ideas to life. By developing new machine learning models, you'll help us achieve our goal of empowering the world to design. Your contributions will enhance user experiences, drive Canvas growth, and keep us at the forefront of the design industry. Together, we'll make a real impact and shape the future of design.

What's in it for you?

Achieving our crazy big goals motivates us to work hard - and we do - but you'll experience lots of moments of magic, connectivity and fun woven throughout life at Canva, too. We also offer a range of benefits to set you up for every success in and outside of work.
