About the Role

As a Senior Research Engineer you will play a key role in our Research project department which focusses on contributing to international standards settings organisations (SSOs) that are developing standards for global deployment in the video compression and machine learning domains. This role entails software engineering and research in standards development relating to compression algorithms and machine learning. It involves developing and testing algorithms, filing associated patents, and presenting proposals to the relevant standards setting organisation. This position is based at Canon Australia’s head office in Macquarie Park in Sydney, with some flexibility for work from home. It reports to the Senior Principal Research Engineer.

Main Duties

  • Technology research
    - Researching technology undergoing standardisation in the context of international standards settings organisations (SSOs), especially the ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 29.
    - Conducting self-directed research into topics under study in the SSO.
  • Idea generation and protection
    - Generating ideas for improvements to standards based on experimentation and analysis.
    - Protecting ideas through patent drafting and claim preparation.
  • SSO participation
    - Presenting technical contributions to SSOs either at face-to-face meeting or online meeting, according to the meeting schedule.

About You

As someone who thrives on working independently, you are used to self-direction and achieving outcomes within defined timeframes. You have an aptitude for collaboration you possess excellent communication skills. You know how to explain complex technical matters to other subject matter experts, including in the context of participation in international standards committees. In addition to your keen eye for detail and you thrive when working under pressure.

Essential criteria include:

  • Expertise spanning video compression standards (such as HEVC or VVC), machine learning (especially computer vision topics).
  • High degree of proficiency in Python, C++, Linux environment.
  • Ability and appetite to travel to international standards meetings.

Desired criteria include:

  • PhD qualified in a relevant area of expertise
  • Experience in participation in SSOs, such as ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 29 and/or ITU-T Q6/SG16
  • Patent drafting, claim drafting, claim chart preparation
  • Understanding of hardware and software algorithm implementation issues
