The Senior Instrumentation & Control System Engineer, reporting to the Manager, Automation Engineering, will work in a focused team environment taking a leadership role in providing discipline specific technical support and commissioning oversight, technical requirements/directions related to field instrumentation, fieldbuses and OT network technologies, project execution management, engineering procedures, analytical systems, and plant control systems within power generating facilities. As well, they will evaluate new and emerging technologies for use within ENMAX’s generating assets.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Leadership role in the design, planning, coordination, management, technical oversight, and supervision of:

    • Execution, construction and commissioning of new sustaining capital and optimization projects

    • Operations and maintenance improvement initiatives for existing generation facilities

    • Collaboration with other engineering team members in support of optimization and asset management initiatives

    • Development of engineering design specifications, standards, and procedures

    • Relationships across engineering, maintenance, and operations to achieve business goals

  • Lead troubleshooting of process and control related issues for ENMAX Energy’s Generating assets.

  • Lead the development and revisions to I&C Engineering and Maintenance standards, procedures, and processes. This includes, but not limited to, job planning, outage organization, and Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) compliance.

  • Lead the development and execution of sustaining capital projects including the development of scope, cost, schedule, evaluation of alternatives, business case development, tender evaluations and recommendations, contract administration, project coordination, construction, turnaround support, and project commissioning, and enhancement programs.

  • Develop and implement instrumentation, analytical, plant controller support systems including calibration management and field device asset management systems for existing and new operating plants.

  • Support operations and maintenance personnel with troubleshooting and resolution of emergent instrumentation and control system related issues at ENMAX generating sites.

  • Collaboration with OT Cybersecurity and Plant Network specialists to support effective cybersecurity processes including security patch management assessment and mitigation within the OT environment, vulnerability risk management, incident response and recovery.

  • Mentoring of Junior I&C Engineers in the development of their technical competency.

Education Required:

  • Must possess a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical or Computer Process Control Engineering and be registered, or qualified to immediately register, with APEGA as a Professional Engineer within the province of Alberta.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in instrumentation and control systems

  • Direct experience with operational knowledge of simple and combined cycle power plants, gas turbines, boilers and associated control systems.

  • Thorough knowledge of field instrumentation, valves & actuators, automation field bus networking, operational technology cyber security best practices and associated systems.

  • Practical experience with Rockwell Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) and their use in industrial processes.

  • Expert level competency with Distributed Control System (DCS) technologies, specifically with Siemens T3000 and Emerson Ovation deployments and support systems.

  • Proficient in data acquisition and analysis through corporate historians, such as OSI PI.

  • Competent in evaluation and assessment of risk as related to process safety.

  • Site experience in an operating facility considered an asset.

Location:  This role will be part of our hybrid (home and office) work force with office workspace located at ENMAX Place (141 - 50th Avenue SE, Calgary, AB). You will work from home on Mondays and Fridays and in the office on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
