PMO Team Lead-IT Services Consulting

Job Type: FTE
Location: Fully Remote (Anywhere in the US)

 

Overview:

As a Cyclotron PMO Team Lead, you will be responsible for managing a team of project and program managers who deliver a portfolio of software solutions projects in a client facing environment. You will collaborate closely with the PMO and cross-practice leaders and team members to understand challenges, create innovative solutions, and work to implement new or improved processes and workflows. You will oversee a portfolio of projects working to optimize client experiences, team member satisfaction, margin and profitability, delivery quality, etc. and serve as an escalation point as needed. You will manage your team of direct reports mentoring them to improve and fine tune their project management and consulting skills, as well as help them to achieve their Cyclotron and professional career goals. As part of the PMO Leadership team, you will work together to strategically advance the PMO practice and its place within the organization. 

The ideal candidate should have a background in consulting and people management, an understanding of technology and digital transformation, exposure and use of various project management methodologies, excel in developing team members into amazing consultants who have a client obsessed, delivery excellence focus. The candidate will have the ability to see things on an aggregate level identifying trends and driving improvement, as well as get into the details as needed on a project by project basis. We are looking for a thought leader who is accustomed to a fast paced, dynamic environment and who has a keen eye for process improvement and opportunities to add value. A growth mindset, fail forward attitude, and CEO of the project thinking are a must!  

What You’ll Do: 

Delivery 

  • Act as Project or Program Manager for the delivery execution of specified contract(s) 

  • Same required responsibilities as otherwise documented for those roles 

Practice Development, Strategy & Thought Leadership 

  • Creates, continuously improves, and champions strong governance in the project management framework(s) and delivery processes. Collaborates with PMO leadership to ensure success in change management including training and successfully executed rollout plans 

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with cross-practice, internal leaders and peers to enhance collaboration, problem solving, and create positive change for org-wide operational and delivery challenges   

  • Accomplish activities to ensure awareness of IT project management industry trends, such as reading articles, blogs, following relevant organizations on socials, round tables and/or trainings. Identify and share learnings to enhance the PMO practice 

  • Uses identified problematic, inefficient, and/or impactful trends to drive innovative solutions for the PMO practice and across Cyclotron 

  • Offers solutions, participates in brainstorming and problem-solving sessions, and collaborates with a positive, can-do attitude. Leads by example to create a culture where team members feel safe, are excited to share ideas, feel they are empowered to create change, and understand the PMO has a fail-forward, growth mindset 

  • Seeks and communicates ways the PMO practice can align to Cyclotron values, operational, and strategic objectives 

People Management: 

  • Lead a team of 6 to 8 Project and/or Program Managers as direct reports 

  • Participate in developing and refining job descriptions, identify skill gaps within the team to inform on needs in the next hire, interviewing, taking part in deciding on which candidates to bring in, and onboarding of new team members 

  • Work with team members to identify areas for growth, interests they would like to pursue, desired learning opportunities, and professional development and establish aligned SMART goals for them to achieve 

  • Work with team members to map out potential career paths within the organization, highlighting opportunities for progression and promotion. Create succession plans with team members as part of this process to guarantee there is understanding and coverage of all current activities to make a smooth transition  

  • Set and communicate clear expectations 

  • Monitor employee performance and provide feedback 

  • Delivery performance across projects and programs delivered 

  • Performance against skill requirements and role expectations 

  • Achievement of established goals 

  • Answering and advising team members on questions related to their role, career path, the PMO practice, or the organization. Seeking additional information or connecting them with another when unable to satisfactorily answer their inquiries 

  • Create and foster connections and relationships to provide a team culture that warrants engagement and motivation 

  • Recognize and reward team members for outstanding efforts and performance 

  • Provide a safe space and the opportunity for 360-degree feedback with the ability to hear and act on constructive feedback provided about your management skills and tactics 

  • Deliver formal annual performance reviews, as well as continual informal feedback and coaching/mentoring throughout the year 

  • Perform direct, difficult and crucial conversations regarding team member’s failure to meet expectations causing undesirable outcomes, discomfort of other team members, and/or inadequate or poor performance. Required to follow best practices in documenting the topics covered and capturing feedback context, the re-establishment of expectations, and subsequent discussion 

  • Work with HR for all formal corrective actions and required documentation, performance improvement plans, and terminations 

Portfolio Management: 

  • Provides governance and oversight of portfolio of projects and programs to ensure project goals or objectives are accomplished within approved time frame, scope and budget 

  • Governance and auditing to confirm appropriate templates/collateral, with quality project specific content, are used 

  • Ensures timely and proper onboarding and execution of projects and programs within portfolio 

  • Provides situational guidance to Project Managers for projects and programs within portfolio, including escalation management (resolution or escalation to next level) 

  • Tracks, manages and communicates overall health of the portfolio including but not limited to financials, project performance, employee satisfaction, client satisfaction, risks and issues, resourcing concerns, funding, invoicing, investments made.  

  • Frequent and recurring (combined review with other TLs) at risk project review. Will discuss at risk projects (yellow turning red and red projects), impact of the situation if unresolved, and the get to green plans for each. 

  • Ensures timely and proper project close outs 

  • Responsible for maximizing resource allocation based on resource availability and prioritized projects  

  • Support white-glove, strategic, or otherwise identified accounts where proactive, senior-level delivery leadership relationships and involvement are required to accomplish highest level of client satisfaction and long-term partnership  

What You’ll Bring

  • 5+ years of proven success working as a consulting project manager in the information technology/software development/digital transformation space 

  • 3+ years of experience as a people manager with direct reports 

  • Solid technical background, with understanding or hands-on experience in software development and cloud technologies 

  • Effective collaboration with remote, distributed teams across varied time zones 

  • Proven ability to delegate and direct a team and resolve conflicts internally and externally 

  • Experience providing visibility of project status and escalations through relevant and accurate information; developing & tracking portfolio dashboards ensuring accountability at all levels 

  • Proven experience leading complex management initiatives, establishing new company and practice processes, driving continual improvement and delivering excellent change management 

  • Amazing at building strong, lasting relationships 

  • Excellent client-facing and internal communication and presentation skills, both written and verbal 

  • Excellent teamwork and interpersonal skills 

  • Logical, strong thought leader, with acute problem-solving skills 

  • Results oriented mentality and the ability to drive to successful outcomes 

Bonus Points: 

  • Project Management Professional (PMP) / PRINCE II certification is a plus 

  • Previous experience with Microsoft funding 

  • Prior delivery of Microsoft Cloud Technologies projects 

  • Success working with globally distributed teams
