The Warship Technical Authority is a unique, exciting, and critical team who operate on behalf of the Ministry of Defence, customer acting as their technical agents at the waterfront ensuring their Warships are Safe and Functional. The Plymouth Warship Technical Authority Hub is a multidisciplined team supporting Legacy Classes (Type 23, Amphibious vessel, and single role mine hunters), Type 26 and future classes as they come online.
The role
As a Principal Naval Architect, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary.
Day to day, you’ll serve a pivotal role in the delivery of the core Warship Technical Authority outputs, responsible for interpreting customer requirements, setting and implementing constructive repair policy and leading and supporting two highly anticipated transformation projects.
- You’ll provide provision of technical advice to MoD authorities and Service Providers to ensure platform capability is functional and available.
- Manage and coordinate Classification Society activities to ensure platforms remain in class.
- Support the MoD with material state management, defining and proposing constructive repair solutions, ensuring they are suitable, cost effective and will provide reliable through life performance.
- Completing technical investigations that support the capability and availability of warships.
- Manage the Design Change process, as required, through effective requirements definition, query responses and acceptance of designs and installations.
- Manage and support the Transformation projects, ensuring surveys are scheduled, completed, and reviewed, to enable a greater material state understanding across the platforms.
This role is full, 35 hours per week and provides hybrid working arrangements with 3-4 days in the office/onsite and 1-2 days working from home.
Essential experience of the Principal Naval Architect
- Proven structural design experience from a highly regulated industry.
- Experience with appropriate analytical software such as stability software (Paramarine, NAPA, FORAN, Maxsurf),FEA, CFD and CAD
- Experience of leading design reviews
- Experience of leading design activities
Qualifications for the Principal Naval Architect
- Ideally Degree qualified but HND/HNC level qualification in an engineering discipline with extensive experience in relevant field will be considered.
- You will be a member of a relevant institution (e.g. RINA, IET, IMechE, IMarEst etc.) and hold Chartered status.
