Job description

What would you do in this role?

As the Technical Team Manager for Money Management, you will play a pivotal role in driving the success of our Money Management business unit and its subdivisions through the strategic use of technology. In this leadership position, you will collaborate closely with stakeholders across departments to develop a robust technical strategy, prioritize shared resources, and ensure the smooth execution of essential business activities. Your responsibilities will include optimizing web presence, allocating resources effectively, managing vendors, ensuring regulatory compliance, and maintaining accurate records. A significant aspect of your role will involve product development for the systems supporting Motley Fool Wealth Management, where you will actively participate in and manage the quality and output of the MFWM tech team's deliverables. This includes analyzing new requests, designing technical solutions, writing and reviewing code, managing projects, and overseeing testing and quality assurance.

But what does this role actually do?

  • Collaborate with project managers to direct and facilitate the prioritization and work request process for the tech team and stakeholders
  • Partner with stakeholders and tech team members to translate complex business problems into innovative technical solutions, particularly for the foolwealth.com system
  • Foster a culture of delivery and continuous improvement within the tech team
  • Manage vendor relationships and assist team members in overcoming integration, performance, and availability challenges
  • Coordinate with various Fool teams, including security, FIX, infrastructure, systems engineering, and data, to ensure alignment with Money Management business unit needs
  • Provide regular updates to leadership on both the business unit and holdings-level technology sides to maintain alignment on strategy and budgeting
  • Proactively investigate and identify future opportunities to enhance client outcomes and improve the business unit's economic performance
  • Conduct regular 1:1s with direct reports, including managers and individual contributors, to build trust, set strategic direction, remove blockers, and address issues proactively
  • Serve as a mentor and coach for the tech team, fostering an inclusive, collaborative, and high-performance work environment
  • Manage team resources, capacity planning, and workload distribution to ensure efficient project delivery and effective utilization of team members
  • Drive professional development and career growth opportunities for team members
  • Balance technical debt management with feature delivery to maintain a sustainable and efficient technical ecosystem

What do you need to apply?

  • Extensive technical background with broad knowledge across multiple technology disciplines and deep expertise in at least one area: software development, systems engineering, database architecture, cybersecurity, or technical project management/ownership
  • Proven experience guiding technical teams from ideation to successful execution and deployment
  • Strong knowledge of and/or passion for investing and personal finance, including an understanding of applicable financial regulations and fiduciary responsibility
  • Sound judgment and technical discipline to effectively guide technical strategy
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, empathy, and market awareness
  • Ability to break down complex technical concepts into understandable and relatable context for non-technical audiences
  • Passion for team-building and mentoring, with a focus on developing a technically sound and business-savvy team
  • Analytical mindset combined with the ability to make high-quality decisions quickly

What does this team do?

The Money Management business unit is an arm of The Motley Fool Holdings and contains several regulated entities, each of which invests assets on behalf of our clients and investors.

  • Motley Fool Asset Management, a mutual funds and ETFs business with over $1.8 billion in assets
  • Motley Fool Ventures, a $264M venture fund

These advisers provide investment management and financial planning services to a wide range of clients, including retail and high net worth investors, through ETFs, separately managed accounts and private investment vehicles.
