Reporting to the Securement Manager, the Electrical Estimator performs take-offs from construction drawings and calculates the costs of labour, equipment, and material for mechanical work (rotating, boiler, piping, and welding) in accordance with established processes and procedures.

This position will be based out of Red Deer, Edmonton, or Calgary, Alberta.

What You Will Be Working On
  • Gather and retain current and accurate data on costs of goods, materials, market labour and equipment rates from suppliers and sub-trades.

  • Solicit supplier quotation for material, equipment, and sub-trade quotations, whether internal to Stuart Olson or from external approved suppliers.

  • Attend pre-tender meetings, site walk down meetings, estimate reviews, and tender closing.

  • Prepare detailed, accurate, professional estimates by calculating material quantity take offs, equipment, and labour rates for tender verification. Using industry standard estimating norms and site production factors or by using historical data from similar estimates.

  • Recommend multiple scenarios based on cost, engineering quality or material availability.

  • Identify most competitive rates based on cost analysis and comparison.

  • Review and evaluate proposal contract, specifications and drawings to determine scope of work and the content of the estimate.

  • Quantify all aspects of the tender document, including tender requirements, written specifications, and project drawings.

  • Review estimate packages to ensure accuracy and completeness prior to final quotation.

  • Create clarification questions to obtain missing information.

  • Prepare final estimate summaries and qualifications ensuring that they address scope, pricing and comprehensiveness.

  • Advise the Project Manager on cost and schedule fluctuations, changes in material availability or other factors affecting construction.

  • Review estimates with management as appropriate, or as directed to by management.

  • Prepare tender for construction revision and costs impact.

  • Prepare and schedule cost impact for tender to construction.

  • Keep accurate records and maintain filing system that supports historic records.

What We Are Looking For
  • Undergraduate degree, relevant trade certificate or equivalent experience

  • 5 years’ related experience in electrical estimating and the field

  • Proficient computer skills, using estimating software, Microsoft Office suite, digital presentation of proposals is an asset

  • Experience with operational software such as Primavera P6, InEight, Procore, Autobid, Accubid, Viewpoint, etc. an asset

  • Proficient in estimating within the “Schedule of Norms” and relevant industrial Man hour standards such as Pagination, MS Means, etc.

  • Knowledge regarding applicable provincial and federal laws and regulations

  • Ability to read and understand construction blueprints and drawings

  • Ability to communicate with project team, subtrades, consultants and owner; understand the issues and be an active participant in the preconstruction process

  • Ability to forge, grow and maintain positive relationships

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously and meet the time demands of unpredictable activities, capable of handling pressure and challenges in a dynamic business environment

  • Ability to work within tight deadlines and prioritization of work to achieve them

  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, troubleshooting, problem-solving, negotiation skills and a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail

  • Highly developed interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills
