About the Role

As a product designer at Fellow, you will be designing new features across all of our platforms, including web, desktop, and mobile apps, as well as our embedded apps on all the main video conferencing platforms. You’ll use your expertise in building engaging apps that users love to design intuitive, delightful experiences focused on simplicity and ease of use. You’ll dive deep on complex problems to come up with broad based solutions, taking into account all of the potential use cases, and delivering unique solutions that scale. You will work closely with a cross-functional team, including our founders, to deliver world-class products to our customers worldwide.

This role requires a hacker mindset, a highly tactical and detail-oriented approach, and a GSD attitude. You’ll be joining a small, multi-disciplinary design team, which means you will play an impactful role in shaping our product and design process before the team scales. But don’t worry, you won’t be alone - we believe design decisions do not solely rest on a designer’s shoulders. Every teammate has a different expertise and background that can be leveraged as an extension of the design team.

We're a remote-first organization, but have offices and co-working spaces available throughout Canada in Ottawa (our HQ), Montreal, and Toronto where you can pop in to work with other team members if you want some in-person time! Bonus points if you’ve worked remotely before and are excited about building a product that enables remote teams to work better together!

What You'll Do (ie, Responsibilities):

  • Solve both new and familiar problems and articulate those solutions through words, sketches, high fidelity mockups, research and/or prototypes.
  • Contribute to and maintain our design library from foundational elements to full architecture and pages.
  • Have a voice in influencing design operations and processes in the organization by joining a small design team that will quickly grow.
  • Build positive and collaborative cross-functional relationships with other designers, product management, engineering, customer success, sales and marketing.
  • Assist in creating high quality marketing collateral from our website pages and product launch materials to translating the core Fellow brand into our product.
  • Assist in research methods for gathering customer insights to inform effective solutions.

What We're Looking For (ie, Qualifications):

We’re looking for multi-disciplinary designers who know how to find a balance between business objectives and user needs. We are a small, fast-moving product team that aims to build lean, practical and delightful features to improve our customer’s workday.

We’re looking for the following key traits from our designers:

  • Innate talent: You have a strong understanding of basic design principles that come as second-nature in any creative scenario. You have a passion for creating beautiful, consistent, pixel-perfect designs.
  • System thinker: You can see an interface from a holistic solution down to the individual re-purposed elements that make it. You understand that every decision has a domino-effect and can either be clean-cut or a compromise.
  • Flexible: You are flexible in your approach, allowing for changes and improvements during the final design execution and development phases. You have a strategic mindset that is focused on shipping the most important aspects of a feature to improve the UX of Fellow.
  • Creative: You can lean in to a more traditional visual design role and understand how to apply a brand across several contexts for product and marketing collateral. You can achieve an expected result with a dash of unexpected creativity.
  • Great communicator: You have strong communication skills when articulating design decisions, discussing requirements, processing feedback, and collaborating cross-functionally.
  • Committed: You see projects through from an initial conversation about requirements all they way to getting user feedback on the final product. This means ensuring the vision that was created in the design phase carries through development and seamlessly into the product.
  • Independent: You know when to bring others in to collaborate on a problem, get answers to your questions or get feedback at certain milestones in your tasks, but you are also an independent worker that can self-manage their day-to-day and be reliable to complete assigned tasks.
  • Customer-Obsessed: You understand that the best UX results are a product of understanding our user’s pain points and needs. Part of your process is to dig into insights, familiar user patterns, real-world use cases and gather feedback directly from customers as a foundation of knowledge before finalizing a solution.
  • Bonus points:
    • Expert in Figma
    • Experience in designing productivity software
    • Strong writing skills
    • Strong animation skills
    • Working knowledge of HTML / CSS
    • Experience with user testing / interviews

The Fine Print

  • We’re 100% remote, but candidates must reside in Canada and be legally entitled to work for any employer.
  • Fellow has broad ambitions. We’re very agile and a place where changes happen fast and all the time. You have to enjoy the challenge of constantly learning and growing in your role, and rolling up your sleeves to make things happen.
  • Fellow is a startup. Our environment is suited for people who thrive in experimentation, and making educated guesses with, at times, limited information. If you prefer a more structured work environment with well defined boundaries, this is not the place for you.
  • You’ll have the autonomy to schedule your work to fit your schedule, but generally, everyone at Fellow has meeting availability between 10:00am and 5:00 pm Eastern Time.

Equal Opportunity Employer

At Fellow, we understand the value of having a diverse team. That’s why we believe in providing equal opportunity employment regardless of race, national or ethnic origin, color, religion, age, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, marital status, family status, genetic characteristics, disability, and conviction. Please let us know if you require accommodation during the recruitment process.
