Summary

 

This position will be responsible for assisting clients in protecting their inventions, conducting patent searches, preparing, filing and prosecuting U.S. and foreign patent applications. A strong background in science or engineering, coupled with at least two years’ experience in U.S and foreign patent practice procedures.

 

Essential Functions

  • Conduct prior art database searches for patentability, prior art searching and analyses
  • Draft and file patent applications, including provisional, utility, PCT, and design patent applications
  • Conduct U.S. and X-U.S. patent prosecution
  • Draft responses to both domestic and foreign Official Actions; manage and maintain client portfolios
  • Collaborate with inventors and technical teams to gather necessary information for patent applications
  • Prepare draft amendments to patent claims, specifications, and abstracts, as may be needed in global patent prosecution
  • Monitor industry trends and changes in patent law to ensure compliance and advise clients accordingly
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Required Skills/Abilities

 

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines effectively
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience working with IP docketing platforms and document management filing systems (some administration work is required)
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment with attorneys, staff, clients, coworkers, and vendors
  • Ability to prioritize and manage time effectively and handle a variety of materials, matters, and tasks simultaneously including delegation of tasks when appropriate
  • Ability to act as a peer mentor and assist with training as needed
  • Proficiency with software programs(s) used by the firm for conflicts and new business intake, recordkeeping, timekeeping and billing, document management and workflow and willingness to attend trainings and develop proficiency when new technologies are rolled out
  • Thorough knowledge of patent prosecution and IP procedural requirements and USPTO practices
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality

Work Environment

 

This position requires the employee to work in a professional office environment with some ability to work from home.  Because the employee will handle sensitive firm and client information, the employee must work from a home office and not a public location during any remote periods. The employee will routinely use standard office equipment.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

 

This is a full-time, benefits-eligible position.  Hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, with some flexibility in start and end times and a minimum of 3 days in the office per week. Occasional work outside normal business hours as client needs demand.

 

This position has a billing expectation of 1600 hours per year.

 

Required Education and Experience

 

Degree in a relevant technical field (e.g., engineering, chemistry, biology, computer science).

 

Currently licensed to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office

 

Preferred Education and Experience

 

Advanced degree (Master’s or Ph.D.) in a relevant technical field (e.g., biomedical engineer, chemical engineering or physics, biophysics)

 

Experience with U.S. and Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) practice and other international patent prosecution is preferred

 

Experience in a law firm or corporate legal department is preferred
