About this role 

As a key contributor on Udemy's Search Engineering team, you’ll help design and build innovative search solutions that power learning for millions of users globally. You'll work on cutting-edge technologies, leveraging your machine learning expertise to solve complex search challenges and enhance Udemy's AI-powered capabilities. This role provides the opportunity to collaborate with a talented team, shape the future of search at Udemy, and continually grow your technical skills while having a meaningful impact on learners around the world.

What you'll be doing
  • You will collaborate with cross-functional teams, including product managers, designers, data scientists, and engineers, to deliver high-performance search experiences that align with Udemy’s mission.
  • You will drive innovative ideas to build, refine and optimize our search and information retrieval systems to meet the needs of millions of users worldwide.
  • You will contribute to vector search systems to enhance performance and scalability.
  • You will experiment with and deploy machine learning models that enhance search relevance, ranking, and personalization, improving the learner experience.
What you’ll have
  • 2+ years of hands-on experience in backend or machine learning engineering, with a proven ability to design and implement scalable, reliable systems.
  • Strong proficiency in at least one backend programming languages such as Kotlin, Java, Python, or Node.js, with a focus on writing clean, maintainable, and well-documented code.
  • Strong understanding of machine learning principles, especially in the context of search or information retrieval systems.
  • Deep knowledge of data structures, algorithms, and object-oriented programming concepts, and experience applying them to design and build efficient, scalable systems and solve complex problems efficiently.
  • Familiarity with machine learning pipelines, from model training to deployment and monitoring, and how they integrate into production systems.
  • Familiarity with Big Data technologies like Spark, Hadoop, and Hive for processing and analyzing large datasets.
  • Understanding of data pipelines and ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes, which are often critical in preparing data for machine learning models.
  • Experience optimizing code for performance and efficiency.
  • Proven track record in debugging and troubleshooting complex technical issues in a live production environment.
  • A passion for continuous learning and staying updated on emerging trends in machine learning, backend engineering, and search technologies.
