Job description

Job Summary:

Momentum is seeking an experienced LCA and Low-Carbon Procurement Specialist on a short-term, contracted basis to support environmental and sustainability consulting services for our various clients. This role is well-suited for someone with expertise in life cycle assessment (LCA), greenhouse gas (GHG) quantification, and sustainability metrics. The LCA Specialist will collaborate with Momentum’s Product Delivery team to achieve Momentum’s clients’ critical goals. Key responsibilities include assessing embodied carbon, supporting regulatory compliance, and reviewing Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs). If you bring a solid background in LCA, GHG emissions quantification, and are proficient in using LCA software and environmental modeling tools, we want to hear from you!

General List of Responsibilities (Specific Scope to be Defined Subsequently):

  • Conduct LCA projects with a focus on environmental impact categories relevant to California regulations. Assess impacts and interpret findings to inform sustainable solutions.
  • Work collaboratively a broad sustainability team to quantify the embodied carbon footprint of the program's construction phase. This may involve developing quantity estimates from environmental impact documents, design drawings, and actual construction data.
  • Review Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and other life-cycle assessment materials, focusing on construction materials such as precast concrete, cast-in-place concrete, steel, and construction equipment. Develop strategies for reducing embodied carbon in construction materials, including creating baselines and incentives.
  • Quantify GHG emissions per California-specific protocols, including analysis of ecosystem carbon stock changes from land use and land-use changes.
  • Prepare environmental data analyses and required reports for California state agencies, such as CARB, in line with regulatory frameworks (e.g., SB 852/862, SB 535, and Assembly Bill 1550).
  • Stay up-to-date with California regulations, ensuring compliance across all tasks. Support with semiannual (July and December) reporting to the Legislature on California Climate Investments and other regulatory submissions.
  • Collaborate with clients to assess project requirements and align on priorities, facilitating understanding and implementation of sustainability practices per agency standards.

Duration of the Contract:

  • Varies based on the specific assignments of each contract.

  • Proficiency in LCA and GHG emissions quantification, including familiarity with land use impacts, knowledge of carbon footprint analysis and ecosystem carbon stock changes.
  • Understanding of California’s emissions and sustainability policies, especially CARB regulations and reporting requirements, and the ability to ensure compliance in project work.
  • Strong skills in analyzing sustainability data and using tools such as ARB’s EMission FACtor (EMFAC) model for emissions estimates.
  • Ability to present technical environmental data to clients clearly and effectively, especially in regulatory and compliance contexts.
  • Proficiency in conducting LCAs using software(e.g., SimaPro, GaBi) and environmental modeling tools, with advanced skills in Excel for data analysis and visualization.
  • Ability to present complex environmental data and findings to clients in a clear and accessible manner, both verbally and in writing.
