The Role

Position:        Technical Solutions Manager (Network Architect) (Non Union)

Division:         Infrastructure Operations

Manager:       Jerry Varghese

The Technical Solutions Manager (Network Architect) will be accountable for developing the network architecture for new solutions based on customer requirements and creating proactive architectural recommendations to existing customers based on capacity and performance, learning from operations and customer requirements. This position is part of Network Solutions & Architecture team, and provides network infrastructure architectural services for existing or potential customers.

The successful candidate will hold close relationships with the vendors and understand industry best practices and upcoming technology opportunities. The position will use their creative problem-solving skills and knowledge of the industry to collaborate with various internal teams to seek out potential opportunities to provide additional solutions. Although the focus of the position will be primarily project-related deployment, the individual will be expected to utilize expertise and technical acumen to assist in escalation to resolve network issues. This position will be an important part of a larger team, providing direct customer support for the improvement of existing infrastructure, new initiatives and projects related to ISM’s network services.

The Network Architect will report directly to the Manager, Network Solutions & Architecture. This is a Non-Union role, subject to regular business working conditions and occasional travel is a requirement.

NOTE: the preferred location for this position is Alberta; however, the work location will also be dependent on the location of the successful candidate. This position will support specific clientele where the requirement is to be either at the client or client authorized sites/premises or at authorized remote locations with proximity to such sites or premises. 

Responsibilities:

  • Proactively introduce architectural changes to network infrastructure to support and introduce new services, technologies, and network solutions, or to optimize any performance or capacity issues in an exiting network infrastructure.
  • Continuously collaborate with customers, internal sales team, and operations team to advise and transform network and security infrastructure to enhance and optimize performance, stability, availability, and security.
  • Research the industry and identify possible use cases to increase revenue, customer satisfaction, market penetration etc.
  • Document, build and support network use cases for the purpose of optimization, automation, and modernization.
  • Build consensus on solutions with stakeholders in customers, sales team, and Network team.
  • Translate customer requirements into technical requirements for product and solution designs and build and present business case to senior management.
  • Maintain detailed documentation to ensure changing requirements and technologies are captured and communicated. 
  • Create and maintain detailed architecture diagrams and documentation and develop standardized offerings.
  • Lead the relationship with vendors to participate in roadmap discussion to align service offerings. 
  • Lead Proof-of-Concepts with vendors and cross functional teams.
  • Facilitate knowledge sharing by presenting and explaining complex technical subjects.
  • Identify and support KPIs to maintain system health and respond to business demands.
  • Lead/support the development of non-production infrastructure to test, validate and train on new concepts and network infrastructure architecture.
  • Demonstrate leadership skills and interpersonal skills. 
  • Provide mentoring and coaching to members of the team.
  • Provide technical solution & support during service outage incidents when escalated. Respond to and resolve escalations, and work with internal stakeholders and vendors on incidents.
  • Define long-term vision with minimal known requirements and changing needs.
  • Explore customer feedback and analytics to drive improvements in the products and services offered. 
  • Proactively ensure optimal performance of existing infrastructure and drives innovation through automation, process improvements to enhance productivity.
  • Participate in infrastructure design consulting, vendor engagements, and production implementations, while collaborating with various business and technology teams to review requirements and recommend solutions.
  • Other duties as assigned


Who You Are

  • Relevant post-secondary education, or an equivalent combination of education, experience, and training, and 8+ years of experience in developing network architectural concepts based on customer requirements, designing, implementing, and supporting complex network infrastructures.
  • Detailed experience with multiple networking technologies and vendors, including rapid proof of concept to prove out key business case metrics.
  • Technical certification (CCIE, CISSP – Architecture, JNCDA, etc.) is a strong asset.
  • Proven experience bringing leading edge/next generation technologies to market.
  • Knowledge of Security, Authentication/Accounting systems (Firewalls, IPSec, Radius, TACACS+).
  • Knowledge of SDWAN, QoS, MPLS, TCP/IP networks, NAT, Routing Protocols, VPRN (Virtual Private Routed Network), etc.
  • Knowledge of transport technologies and the circuit providers.
  • Good understanding of routing/switching/security/SDWAN products and platforms.
  • Excellent time management and issue follow-up skills, ability to work independently and in a team environment, and ability to work on multiple competing priorities.
  • Strong leadership, mentoring and team building skills and must be able to collaborate effectively with a group of high performing individuals.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability to back decisions with research and the “why,” and articulate several options, the pros and cons for each, and recommendations.
  • Understanding of ITSM Framework is essential, preferably ITIL Methodology V3 and V4.
  • Understanding of Problem Solving and Decision-Making methodologies, preferably Kepner Tregoe.
  • Excellent interpersonal, and customer service focused attitude.
  • Driver’s license and ability to travel.
