Job description

Job Overview

We are a prominent organization committed to the restoration of grasslands and the enhancement of soil carbon sequestration throughout the United States. Our vision is to empower ranchers by promoting regenerative land management practices that not only improve soil health and foster biodiversity but also contribute to climate change mitigation through carbon dioxide absorption. We have successfully collaborated with over 125 producers across 1.2 million acres in 20 states, implementing methods that rejuvenate grasslands, enrich wildlife habitats, and promote healthy soil ecosystems. By partnering with us, ranchers can access new revenue opportunities via our carbon credit initiative.

As the Lead Data Scientist/Data Engineer, you will be instrumental in architecting, developing, and overseeing the data infrastructure that underpins the measurement and verification of soil carbon removal credits. Working closely with agronomists, land managers, and software engineers, you will derive data-driven insights that shape our data science strategy and execution. A pivotal aspect of your responsibilities will involve crafting effective Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) solutions that guarantee the precision and transparency of our carbon removal initiatives. You will lead endeavors to enhance tools for quantifying and forecasting soil carbon storage potential utilizing diverse datasets.

Key Responsibilities

  • Formulate and implement a cohesive data strategy that aligns with our mission. Provide strategic direction and leadership to a committed team of data science and engineering experts.
  • Design, execute, and manage scalable data architectures, pipelines, and databases supporting extensive quantification of soil carbon removals and MRV processes.
  • Oversee the collection, integration, and validation of data from diverse sources including soil sensors, satellite imagery, and third-party databases, ensuring accuracy and consistency of information.
  • Spearhead the creation of data-driven MRV solutions to monitor, validate, and report on land management strategies that promote soil carbon removals, ensuring compliance with industry standards.
  • Drive the development and implementation of advanced analytics, machine learning models, and predictive algorithms to enhance carbon measurement and monitoring capabilities.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including environmental scientists, software developers, and product managers, to integrate data solutions into our carbon management platform.
  • Develop and maintain dashboards, reports, and visualizations that deliver actionable insights to both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Stay abreast of emerging trends and technologies in data science, data engineering, and environmental sustainability. Identify opportunities for enhancing our data capabilities and fostering innovation.

Required Skills

  • A strong passion, drive, and a positive attitude, with a minimum of 8 years of experience in data science, data engineering, or a related field, showcasing a proven track record in leadership, innovation, and achieving results.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Data Science, Data Engineering, Computer Science, Environmental Science, or a related discipline; a PhD is advantageous.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, or Java.
  • Experience with data warehousing, ETL processes, and database management (SQL, NoSQL).
  • Expertise in cloud platforms (AWS, Google Cloud, Azure) and big data technologies.
  • Strong foundation in statistical analysis, machine learning, and predictive modeling.
  • Familiarity with GIS, remote sensing, and environmental data is highly desirable.
  • Experience in developing MRV systems for carbon projects is a significant plus.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, capable of explaining complex data concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • A commitment to contributing to the regenerative movement and a basic understanding of soil carbon storage and regenerative land management practices (this knowledge can be acquired on the job).
  • Prior startup experience is preferred, but an understanding of operating in a fast-paced, high-growth environment is essential.
  • Willingness to work from our office in downtown San Antonio.

Career Growth Opportunities

In this position, you will have the chance to lead a dedicated team of data science and engineering professionals and stay current with the latest advancements in data science and environmental sustainability, identifying pathways to enhance our capabilities and drive innovation.
