 **This is a mobile position which will work primarily out in the assigned communities.**

Office Location:  Mobile/Remote position, will be required to travel across Grant Counties of Gaston, Lincoln, Iredell, Catawba and Rutherford

Projected Hiring Range:  $51,000 - $55,000, Depending on Experience

Primary Purpose of Position: The Employment Specialist will develop a network of Recovery Friendly Workplaces and provide career placement assistance to members with substance use disorder in a five-county region. This position is responsible for developing a sustainable infrastructure to continue job growth, resource development, retention and the early detection of obstacles for individuals in recovery.  The employment specialist position aims to reduce stigma related to SUD and increase satisfaction of employers and employees associated with the SAMHSA Workforce in Recovery (WIR) Grant.  


Role and Responsibilities:  

  • Build rapport with members enrolled in the WIR program to understand their employment goals and challenges.
  • Identify and match members with appropriate job opportunities based on their skills and interests.
  • Provide guidance on resume writing, interview preparation, and job search strategies.
  • Track member progress, job placements, and outcomes by maintaining accurate records and reports.
  • Develop a network of Recovery Friendly Employers and provide technical assistance to business owners and human resource leaders. Work with employers and employees to reduce perceived stigma by providing educational opportunities.
  • Collaborate with and leverage resources from the State Workforce Development Board, Local Workforce Development boards in  each county, and Workforce Investment Activities.
  • Develop strategies that will reduce barriers for obtaining employment for justice involved individuals with substance use disorder including second chance employment, record expungement and bonding programs. 
  • Provide support, direction, and technical assistance to implement a customized Recovery Friendly Workplace Plan in conjunction with Recovery Friendly NC Coalition.
  • Develop, identify, and/or implement educational training programs that utilize direct assessments and prior learning assessments which highlight  prior knowledge, skills, competencies, and experiences.
  • Develop avenues to assist employers with informing employees of resources related to SUD to promote recovery.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of vocational and/or training resources in the WIR grant participating counties 
  • Comprehensive knowledge of community resources in the WIR grant participating counties

  • Ability to independently organize multiple tasks and priorities and to effectively complete tasks within assigned timeframes

  • Ability to establish and cultivate positive relationships with others at all levels of the organization and within the community
  • Proficient in computer applications including Microsoft Office as well as online job platforms 


Education and Experience Required:  Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and a minimum of 3 years’ experience in workforce development or similar experience. Strong background working with individuals who have a Substance Use Disorder.

Education and Experience Preferred:  Master’s degree
