About Sandy Hook Promise
Sandy Hook Promise
(SHP) is a national nonprofit organization with a mission to end school shootings, and create a culture change that prevents violence and other harmful acts that hurt children. Through its life-saving evidence-informed Know the Signs prevention programs, SHP educates and empowers youth and adults to recognize, intervene, and get help for individuals who may be socially isolated and/or at risk of hurting themselves or others. SHP is a moderate, bipartisan organization that supports sensible policy solutions that address the human side of gun violence and make schools safer.


SHP is led by several family members whose loved ones were killed in the tragic mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012.

Location
We are looking for a candidate based in or close to Washington, D.C.. This is a hybrid role in which staff have the flexibility to work from home but will also work in the D.C. office. Local travel will be required from time to time. 


About the Role
The Federal Policy Senior Associate plays a crucial role on the Sandy Hook Promise Action Fund team, focusing on the planning, development, and implementation of federal legislative initiatives. This position involves conducting research and analyzing policies related to school safety, youth mental health, and gun violence prevention to further the mission of the Action Fund. This role will report to the Senior Director, Federal Policy. 

Job Responsibilities Include (but are not limited to)
  • Conduct research and analysis to support the policy team's federal priorities, including the creation of written materials. 
  • Monitory and update managers on federal legislative, regulatory, litigation, and partnership opportunities related to SHP priorities such as gun safety, youth mental health and school safety.
  • Establish and maintain systems for organizing the federal policy team’s activities, including tracking meetings. 
  • Lead communication with the Hill regarding federal petitions, specific appropriations requests, and updates at the district and state level. 
  • Coordinate the involvement of youth and constituent voices to align with our federal policy priorities. 
  • Attend and monitor briefings, hearings, panels, and events related to SHP federal and organizational priorities. 
  • Oversee and manage key relationships with external partner organizations and Congressional offices.  
  • Collaborate internally to create, maintain, and distribute policy letters, testimony, and materials for Congress and other external stakeholders.  
  • Collaborate with staff members across the organization as necessary. 
  • Organize and coordinate logistics for policy-related events and briefings, including Hill days and youth leadership visits. 
  • Manage and respond to inquiries received through the policy team’s general phone line, voicemails, and emails. 
Desired Skills and Experience
  • 2+ years of direct experience in policy advocacy, including work on Capitol Hill or in state government, and some involvement with federal policy. This experience may come from internships, volunteer roles, or paid positions with nonprofits, federal agencies, elected or appointed officials, or in public policy, advocacy, or government affairs. 
  • Exceptional writing, research, and verbal communications skills. 
  • Knowledge of the political landscape and federal legislative processes, with a commitment to bipartisan work. 
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills with a demonstrated ability to think strategically. 
  • Proactive self-starter with the ability to effectively manage-up. 
  • Familiarity with, and ability to use, the Microsoft suite of programs (e.g., Word, Excel, and PowerPoint). 
  • A commitment to SHP's vision and values.
  • Performs other duties as required.
Benefits and Salary Range
The salary range for this position is $58,000 - $68,000.
(SHP follows a strict internal rubric to help guide salary placement and ensure equitable pay amongst new hires and current staff. New hires should expect to be brought on at the start of the range, except in extenuating circumstances.)

Our organization operates within a distributed workforce, allowing for location flexibility across the country for most positions. We provide remote office support for all staff, which includes a laptop, home office reimbursement, monthly Wi-Fi reimbursement up to $40, and monthly cell phone reimbursement up to $50.
