Job Description

The Head of Tax will deliver tax compliance and advisory services across the Montu business on a range of tax related matters to ensure compliance with tax laws. Maintaining effective internal controls, the role will collaborate with cross-functional teams including finance, legal and operations to support Montu’s overall tax strategy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Tax Governance
    • Ensure that tax related matters are dealt with in a manner consistent with Montu’s tax risk appetite
    • Maintain oversight of tax control documentation and independent testing
    • Monitor and analyse proposed and newly enacted tax legislation, regulations and judicial decisions
    • Develop and regularly review Montu tax policies 
  • Compliance
    • Oversee the preparation and review of Australian domestic tax compliance, including:
      • Assist with preparation and review of Montu's Australian income tax returns, and accompanying schedules
      • Preparation of BAS/GST returns
      • Ownership of the Company’s transfer pricing policies
    • Review of other tax compliance items including, but not limited to R & D claims, FBT returns, Payroll tax, withholding tax obligations, tax instalment obligations, and ATO notifications
  • Statutory Reporting
    • Oversee the preparation and review of periodic tax statutory reporting including:
      • Preparation and review of tax statutory reporting workings for Montu
      • Preparation and review of tax disclosures in all statutory reports
  • Relationship Management
    • Responsible for various tax-related relationships including:
      • Management of external tax advisors and management of the associated budget (in conjunction with the broader finance team)
      • Management of the relationship and queries from the Australian Tax Office and other domestic/foreign authorities, as appropriate
  • Advisory
    • Provide tax advice to the Company on business transactions such as international related party dealings and M&A activity including:
      • Working with external tax, legal and other advisors to identify tax issues in relation to new transactions and acquisitions
      • Establishing and executing tax step plans for new transactions and projects to ensure correct and effective implementation of tax advice

Qualifications
  • 8+ years relevant work experience in Australian taxation, including experience in a high growth corporate, multinational company or big 4 firm
  • Excellent knowledge and experience in Australian corporate tax including dealing with transfer pricing
  • Practical knowledge and experience in a broad range of other taxes will be preferred including, but not limited to GST, withholding taxes, FBT and R & D claims
  • Ability to clearly communicate tax technical issues to non-tax professionals
  • Knowledge and experience in international tax (e.g. NZ, UK) would be highly regarded
  • A team player who values inclusion, collaboration and personal growth
  • Pragmatic and solution driven
  • Strong project management skills with ability to manage own time and work independently
  • Strong work ethic and a genuine interest in the business outcomes
  • People leader experience desirable
  • Relevant tertiary degree (eg Business, Accounting, Commerce and/or related tax law)
  • Professional qualification (eg CA, CPA, Chartered Tax Advisor)
