Job description

Symetra has an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Sr. Life and Disability Underwriter!

About The Role

In this role, you will contribute to the achievement of Symetra's sales, profitability, persistency, and service goals by underwriting new business and renewal accounts for Life, AD&D, Short Term Disability (STD), Family Medical Leave (FML) and Long-Term Disability (LTD), typically between 1,500 and 10,000 lives. You will also provide training and mentoring to the Underwriting team and other departments, manage projects and/or training initiatives.

What You Will Do

  • New Business Pricing
    • Analyze competitor claim experience to develop experience rate, run manual rate and combine in accordance with credibility formulas to determine appropriate rate levels for new business accounts using a variety of rating and funding methods.
    • Review plan and process design, recommend changes, and calculate rates for requested or recommended changes.
    • Develop and communicate new business rate recommendations in accordance with the level of authority.
    • Process sold accounts following established procedures.
    • Account size primarily between 1,500 and 10,000 lives and sales expectations of $4.5 MM per year.
  • Renewal Pricing and Book of Business Management
    • Analyze Symetra claim experience to develop experience rate, run manual rate and combine with credibility formulas to determine appropriate rate levels for in force accounts using a variety of rating and funding methods.
    • Develop renewal package with experience and rate analysis, renewal decision, plan and process change recommendations and experience summary.
    • Monitor assigned book of business to balance profitability and persistency and initiate actions to improve experience when necessary.
    • Process sold renewals following established procedures.
    • Block size of approximately 25 accounts primarily between 1,500 and 10,000 lives worth approximately $17 MM annual premium.
  • Relationships
    • Develop and maintain positive relationships with Symetra sales, field and home office service, actuarial and claims teams.
    • Visit sales offices for training and expanding sales activity and assisting in sale of renewals.
    • Develop and maintain relationships with producers, clients and reinsurance partners including running external meetings (approximately 5-6 trips per year)
    • Provide competitive feedback on rates and products to management.
  • Projects, Mentoring and Reporting
    • Manage projects and training initiatives as assigned.
    • Develop improvements in underwriting practices, pricing, and marketing strategies.
    • Act as mentor to junior underwriters and analysts through training, answering questions and reviewing accounts that exceed their authority levels.
    • Assist in interviewing and hiring of new staff members.
    • Maintain accurate and up to date reporting of assigned presales and renewals.

Compensation

Salary Range: $82,900 – $138,100 plus eligibility for annual bonus program

Who You Are

  • High School Diploma required. A 4-year college degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience preferred.
  • 5+ years life and disability underwriting or actuarial experience.
  • Outstanding analytical and technical skills.
  • Strong Excel, Word, and Power Point skills.
  • Able to act independently, be consultative, negotiate and make decisions within authority limits and make recommendations outside of authority limits.
  • Able to travel and make/run presentations to clients and producers and represent Symetra at industry events.
  • Significant knowledge of employee benefits.
  • Service oriented with commitment to meet deadlines.
  • Strong teamwork orientation.
  • Critical thinker with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven decision-maker.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Fosters a positive and proactive work environment.
  • Industry designations such as CEBS, FLMI, DHP DIF, DIA or HIA are a plus.
