Job description

Business Insider is hiring a hybrid Social Media Video/Editorial Operations Fellow to join our Audience and Operations teams. This fellow will split their time between distributing videos across various social networks and supporting our larger newsroom with operations tasks.

Business Insider is for people who are driven, optimistic and always looking forward. Our mission is to inspire action through thought-provoking stories. We tell our audience what they want and need to know to improve their lives and the world with storytelling that is accessible, smart, sometimes unexpected, and always helpful. Our team members embody and uphold Business Insider’s three core values: we are all one team, we are effective, and we strive to get better every day.

The Business Insider Fellowship Program is for early career journalists who want to spend six months learning from a newsroom full of passionate, dedicated journalists. Fellows are assigned to teams and become experts in digital storytelling. They produce real work that is distributed to our audience of millions, and by the end of six months, they are prepared for the next phase of their journalism careers. This paid role requires you to work for 40 hours a week. Fellowships can be hybrid, and we expect New York-based fellows to come into our offices at least twice per week.

The Role & Teams:

As a Social Media Video Fellow, you will be responsible for distributing new videos and stories on social channels as they are published, as well as recirculating dozens of evergreen archive videos per day. We work with content from all verticals, including breaking news. The ideal fellow must be an independent worker. Note: this is NOT a video editing or production role.

As an Editorial Operations Fellow, you will support the editorial operations team on projects ranging from managing our freelance contracts and invoices to coordinating newsroom meetings. The fellow will perform administrative duties to help our global newsroom run smoothly.

This fellow will split their time evenly between both teams. They will report directly to the Editorial Operations Manager and the Senior Audience Engagement Producer.

The fellow is required to work at least two days per week out of Business Insider’s New York City bureau.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Upload and distribute fresh videos daily across all Business Insider channels on social platforms, including but not limited to YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram, and TikTok
  • Generate compelling headlines, copy, and descriptions that grab audience attention and convey the essence of the video or story
  • Create thumbnails using Photoshop to optimize visual appeal and click-through rates
  • Ensure timely distribution of breaking news videos and stories across relevant social channels
  • Work closely with the editorial operations team to handle freelancer contracts, approve invoices, and keep our freelance roster up to date
  • Send newsroom notes and reminders

The ideal candidate has:

  • Exceptional organizational skills and the ability to multitask
  • The ability to communicate clearly about their time management
  • Work experience with one or more social media platforms
  • Experience in packaging stories for publication
  • Demonstrable knowledge of processing invoices
  • Previous experience with handling contracts
  • A major plus if they have experience with Asana, Worksuite, Photoshop, and Premiere

Additionally, all of our editorial fellows should have:

  • A passion for digital storytelling and voracious reading habits
  • Familiarity with digital and social media
  • The ability to work quickly and collaboratively with a fast-paced team
  • Proofreading and copyediting skills
  • A love of Insider and our mission to serve readers with the information and inspiration they need in a way that’s accurate, fair, fast, and fun

Salary & Benefits:

  • Fellows are paid $20 per hour (overtime when needed and approved)
  • PTO and paid holidays
  • Eligible for medical, dental, and vision benefits on 91st day of employment

Please apply with a resume and cover letter and specify why you're interested in working on this team. If you’d like some tips, check out our best practices guide.
