Organization Summary
East Side House, founded in 1891, is a 501(c) (3) organization that has served the South Bronx since 1963. The organization is dedicated to the community and focused on providing resources and opportunities. East Side House has identified that education is the foundation for economic improvement and through its youth education and technology programs, it teaches skills to allow its students and clients to become more self-sufficient and independent. As a community resource, the organization also provides services to families and a growing senior population. In 2020 the organization began food distribution as an additional way to provide economic support to the community we serve.
Jobs-Plus is a proven, place-based employment program designed to increase the earnings and employment of working-age residents in designated public housing developments or a cluster of developments. Jobs Plus is operated by East Side House Settlement and is based in the Mott Haven neighborhood of the South Bronx. It offers workforce development, financial empowerment services, and community building programming to over 3000 residents. With a recent 3-year contract renewal, Jobs Plus is looking to expand to two neighboring developments at Mitchel and Mott Haven Houses, and the services provided to residents since 2013. This expansion will include a heightened focus on training and education as well as career advancement services.
Under the supervision of the Assistant Director, the Community Coach will perform each essential duty of this position in a satisfactory manner. Key employee responsibilities are listed below:
Primary Functions
Duties and Responsibilities shall include but are not limited to the following:
- Execute grassroots outreach strategy that will include regular check-ins at informal gathering places such as local pharmacies, bodegas, gas stations, car garages, dry cleaners, car washes, gas stations, barbershops, beauty salons, nail salons, libraries, Laundromats, houses of worship, fast food restaurants, and the community affairs offices at the 40th Police Precinct and PSA 7.
- Work in partnership with existing neighborhood associations such as the Tenants Association
- Do outreach in informal gathering places within NYCHA housing developments, such as sitting areas and playgrounds
- Provide ongoing input, information, and materials (as requested) that support internal and external communication efforts about programming and opportunities.
- Coordinate or assist in planning for events such as community meetings, block parties, health fairs, and local business fairs
- Develop systems to distribute information to community residents; Identify and implement the creative use of evolving social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter to increase citizen engagement and dialogue
- Provide ongoing support to Jobs Plus staff and community partners engaged in programming and opportunities.
- Coordinate outreach and referrals from the Resident Association Presidents at each of the housing developments served as well as with East Side House programs at four NYCHA-based early childhood centers, three NYCHA-based elementary afterschool programs, three NYCHA-based senior citizen centers, and seven school-based programs, which serve many residents of public housing from the Mott Haven neighborhood.

Qualifications
Required Skills/Experience
- High school diploma or GED, AA degree in the human service-related field a plus.
- Excellent verbal communication skills. Bi-lingual (English/Spanish) preferred but not required. Must be a people person.
- Experience with grassroots information dissemination strategies. Previous outreach experience in urban communities helpful.
- Knowledge of, and familiarity with, institutions and people from the Mott Haven neighborhood highly preferred.
- Must be self-directed and organized.
- Basic computer skills are necessary.
- Must live in the Mill Brook Housing Complex or surrounding neighborhood.
- Must clear fingerprinting and background check

Required Clearances

Work Environment
Business casual. This job operates in an office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.
Travel
Minimal expected for this position.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. This role is generally a sedentary role; however, some sorting/filing is required. Requirements include the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary.
