Job description

Who we are

At Fortis Games we aspire to make great games that bring people together while redefining how game companies work. We believe in building a sense of belonging through our games, their communities, and how we operate and treat each other. Through our game communities, we will create powerful connections and lasting memories. We will foster a culture of diversity, equity and belonging where together our diverse skills, experiences and backgrounds impact the games we make.

We are an early but mighty organization with a leadership team of game industry veterans. There are many opportunities for you to have a big impact on the products we'll be making as well as the overall direction of the company. If you're passionate about tackling difficult problems with direct and thoughtful communication and team first mentality, we may be the right place for you.

About the role

As a Staff 3D Character Artist, you will be responsible for creating high-quality, stylized 3D assets that elevate the visual experience of mobile games. Collaborating closely with internal teams, you’ll ensure that your work aligns with the artistic direction and performance requirements of the game. Additionally, you’ll work with outsourced teams, providing feedback and clear guidance to maintain consistency and quality. This includes delivering benchmark assets and developing style guides to ensure that all outsourced work meets the high standards of the project, helping shape the visual identity and overall quality of the game.

  • Create high-quality 3D assets using a range of techniques, including high-to-low poly workflows, hard surface modeling, and organic sculpting.
  • Design and develop stylized characters with a deep understanding of shape language, anatomy, proportion, and character design.
  • Collaborate with the Lead 3D Artist and Art Director to ensure all assets maintain visual consistency and meet the project’s quality standards.
  • Work with external partners, providing guidance and reviewing outsourced assets to ensure they meet the quality and style of the project.
  • Work with the animation team to ensure models are rigged and skinned properly for smooth animation.
  • Partner with game design and programming teams to optimize assets for mobile platforms, ensuring performance without sacrificing visual quality.
  • Mentor and guide junior artists, fostering growth and enhancing the quality of the team’s work.
  • Stay updated with the latest techniques, tools, and industry trends, contributing new ideas and innovations to the team.
  • Actively participate in team meetings and contribute to the overall game development process.

What you’ll achieve (outcomes vs what people will do)

  • Consistently produce high-quality, optimized 3D assets  that set the benchmark for the project.
  • Help define and translate the game’s art direction into stunning, immersive characters and environments.
  • Contribute to a collaborative workflow that enhances communication between art, design, and programming teams, ensuring seamless integration of assets.
  • Mentor junior team members, fostering their growth and strengthening the team’s overall capabilities.

What you’ll need to be successful

  • Proven experience in 3D modeling and texturing, using tools like Zbrush, Maya, and Substance.
  • Expertise in digital sculpting and high-to-low poly workflows.
  • Experience integrating 3D assets into Unity or similar game engines, ensuring functionality and optimization for mobile devices.
  • In-depth knowledge of mobile optimization techniques to ensure assets are both visually impressive and performance-friendly.
  • Ability to mentor and guide junior artists, contributing to their development and the team’s success.
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills, enabling you to work effectively with all departments involved in the game’s production.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
