Great American’s Specialty Human Services Division has protected the mission of nonprofit and social service organizations since 1980. The division is one of the first insurance companies to recognize the special needs of these organizations. Over the years, coverage and services have expanded to ensure expertise to meet the evolving needs of this marketplace.
This is a multi-line division that writes: abuse or molestation, accident & health, commercial auto, crime & employee dishonesty, data compromise, directors & officers, equipment breakdown, general liability, inland marine, professional liability, property, umbrella and excess liability, unemployment risk. Coverage is available for hundreds of classes of business, including but not limited to churches, zoos, gyms, shelters, etc.
The Specialty Human Services Division is looking for a Senior Underwriter to join their team. This will be a fully remote role in the USA.
Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities
- Has responsibility for risk selection/rejection, pricing, retention, growth, and profitability per divisional objectives.
- Underwrite primarily renewals for an assigned/established book of business.
- Uses independent judgment and initiative to support business goals.
- Maintains a high level of customer service.
- Analyzes coverage and limit requests and decides what terms to offer.
- Meet or exceed new business production goals while maintaining profitability across assigned portfolio and adhering to authority and strategies.
- Assesses risk quality and compliance within company guidelines and initiates appropriate loss prevention actions.
- Orders and screens miscellaneous reports needed in the rating and underwriting processes, such as Motor Vehicle reports, loss history reports, credit checks, outside inspections, loss control, etc.
- Develops and maintains effective business relationships with internal and external customers/coworkers in order to attract and retain profitable business.
- Interprets, explains, and markets products and services.
- Establish relationships with key trading partners and drive strong account retention activity across assigned territory through telephone and Teams interactions.
- Applies underwriting rules and guidelines, rating manual rules, and insurance laws and regulations.
- May provide guidance and assistance to lower level positions.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Competencies/Technical Skills
- Proven ability to successfully negotiate on all levels and develop producer relationships
- Demonstrate ability to analyze risks, prioritize the gathering of underwriting data, and clearly communicate a well thought out underwriting approach
- Excellent communication and documentation skills required
- Ability to work independently, show initiative, while demonstrating strong collaboration skills in a team environment
- Strong time and desk management skills
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite as well as other business-related software
Job Requirements
Education: Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience
Field of Study: Business, Liberal Arts or a related discipline.
Experience: Generally, 3 to 6 years of related experience. Progression toward certification in area of expertise preferred; appropriate certifications could include Associate in Underwriting (AU), Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU), Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC), Program in General Insurance (INS) or Associate of Risk Management (ARM).

Within the range, individual pay takes into account a variety of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skills, education, training, licensure and certifications, experience of the candidate, the role's scope, complexity, and other business and organizational needs.
