Job Description Summary This position will be responsible for executing Protection and Control Engineering and Consulting services in Transmission, Distribution and Industrial markets in the US and Canada. Reporting through the Grid Automation North America Protection and Control Engineering manager, the Power System Protection and Control Engineer will be part of the regional Projects and Services execution team. Activities will include designing, programming, testing and commissioning protection and control related applications for power system design and substation automation projects.
Job Description
Essential Responsibilities
- Design and delivery of complex protection solutions for generation, transmission, distribution systems for electrical utilities and industrial clients.
- Leading the design and development of microgrid solutions including power flow optimization and dispatching algorithms.
- Lead engineering studies and analyses efforts such as: short circuit, load flow, arc-flash studies, protective device coordination studies.
- Perform advanced power system studies and analysis such as reliability studies, feasibility studies, power quality, harmonic studies, harmonic mitigation studies, motor starting, power factor correction, Underground power cable sizing, etc.
- Create complex relay setting files to include programming of Protection and Control Elements, Complex control Logic and Communications settings for GE and third-party protective relays.
- Test customized Protection and Control solutions both in house and at customer installations.
- Ability to model and conduct power system simulations using RTDS simulator or equivalent.
- Provide factory acceptance test plans and testing services to validate protection designs for customer witnessing.
- Site acceptance test planning and field support up to and including commissioning of new applications.
- Assist software tool development to automate the engineering process internally and externally with key utility partners.
- Lead technical discussions and negotiations with key customer accounts, participate in project meetings with project managers and customers on technical discussions.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering specialized in power system.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in design, study, and analysis of electric power systems.
Desired Characteristics
- Knowledge of power system steady stat and transient analysis, fault study and protection theory. Familiar with symmetrical components.
- Working experience with study software and power system tools such as Mathcad, MATLAB, ASPEN, CAPE, SKM,CYME, CDEGS, WinIGS, or Etap
- Working knowledge on substation communication protocols such as IEC 61850, DNP, Modbus
- Strong field experience with system commissioning and testing including Doble / Omicron test equipment or similar.
- Ethical and professional business manner in interaction with team members and customers.
- Technical skills to execute projects, identify opportunities, and write SOW proposals.
- Estimate engineering efforts for customer proposals and projects.
- Proficient in technical report writing, MS Word and Excel
- Effective communication skills including technical writing and presentations.
- Strong learning skills, demonstrate collaborative style and Customer focused.
- Professional engineering accreditation in New York state is essential.
The base pay range for this position is 111,200.00 - 148,300.00 USD Annual. The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate’s experience, education, and skill set. This position is also eligible for a 15% variable incentive bonus .
