Job Description:
Applied Systems, Inc., a worldwide leader in insurance technology, is currently searching for a knowledgeable, passionate and empathetic Engineering Team Lead / Manager (75% people management and 25% technical engineering awareness) with excellent interpersonal skills to join our Engineering people leadership team in the UK due to expansion.
Reporting into the UK Engineering Director, and working under minimal supervision, you will provide guidance and direction to assigned teams of developers working on Applied Systems product programming, enhancements and defect fixes, including mentorship, coaching and career Engineering to the individuals assigned to your teams.
Our Engineering Teams are responsible for developing, maintaining and delivering to market the software solutions of Applied Systems. This includes all commercial software systems as well as system level components, migrations tools, and integration toolkits.
What You’ll Do
- Maintain awareness of the Company’s strategic goals as well as Engineering plans and, upon request, to develop specific project programmes and implementation plans which support these targets
- Agree the priorities and timescales of all business activities with the Manager
- Assist with the Engineering of necessary personnel resource plans in terms of appropriate skill levels and competencies
- Manage multiple Engineering teams, which includes addressing mentoring responsibilities as well as coordinating closely with Engineering Technical Leads
- Develop direct reports under your remit and manage their training needs as well as providing consultative, technical and employee support, as appropriate
- Communicate with direct reports on a regular basis in order to ensure that they remain briefed on a wide range of topics such as strategic and specific Engineering plans
- Drive and enable the performance of direct reports through effective collaboration, clear goal setting and regular performance feedback in support of Applied’s Performance Enablement program
- Pursues a program of self-Engineering through the use of selected reading, seminars, and participation in continuing education
- Work closely with the team’s Scrum Masters to coordinate to support the Engineering team’s health and productivity
- Coach and mentor direct reports to assist in meeting their career goals, improve technical capability and performance objectives by honing new capabilities, establishing IDPs (Individual Performance Plans) and complete quarterly performance enablement reviews
- Actively participate in daily stand-up meetings, sprint reviews, sprint retrospectives, and sprint planning representing Engineering input to ensure delivery of Applied’s product performance
- Ensure quality continually improves in your Engineering team’s respective areas of responsibility
- Manage, prioritise and schedule your own work to meet all targets and deadlines
- Coordinate, and support where necessary, the interview process for new Engineering team members
What You’ll Need to Succeed
We’re looking for someone who:
- Can work remotely or hybrid from an Applied Systems Europe Office
- Is ideally educated to degree level (BSc or BEng) or equivalent in Computer Science or a related discipline, or has equivalent work experience
- Is able to travel a maximum of once per month to Belfast
Your experience should include some or all of the following:
- Previous experience managing and coaching one or more sizeable engineering teams
- Familiarity with the SDLC and modern Engineering best practices
- 5+ years’ experience within a DevOps environment, using Kanban boards and Agile practices.
- Over 2 years full stack engineering experience with .NET technologies is a plus
