Position Overview:

We have an ambitious Enterprise Data Office and are building a class-leading data team that works to solve complex business challenges and provide insights to improve our business and customer experience. To enhance the team, we are looking for an innovative and enterprising Data Governance Steward who plays a critical role in shaping and implementing our enterprise-wide data governance and data management roadmap and strategy. The Data Governance Steward will work in areas required for the day-to-day management of data at TELUS Digital including: data quality, metadata management, lineage capabilities, the data governance processes surrounding these capabilities and the data governance program in general. This role will help support the overall data governance effort by providing data stewardship guidance across the business functions including advocating for good data governance, stewardship, data identification, and data quality to enable business outcomes. This person will be expected to collaborate with many stakeholders in the data area including functional representatives, corporate representatives, IT, privacy, legal, compliance, IT security, etc.



Essential Responsibilities:

  • Lead discovery and recording of business metadata and ensure that the metadata remains up to date for assigned data assets
  • Promote data accuracy and adherence to defined global governance practices, as well as driving acceptance of data standards and policies across the various business segments
  • Create, validate, and manage individual business data definitions within business glossary
  • Ensure data is classified and the metadata is enriched. Specifically, codes are applied to each data element such as for privacy laws, and the classification process speeds up our ability to find data items with a higher degree of accuracy
  • Ensure high quality data at the stage of consumption. Work with the data quality leads to develop specific data quality standards and rules. Implement utilization of standards from data library.
  • Monitor your domain(s) for quality issues, resolve issues, develop and implement improvements where data is problematic at the source
  • Coordinate data metrics, and report on domain data in coordination with the Data Quality Lead
  • Maintain and advise relevant stakeholders on data governance-related matters within the applicable domain with a focus on the business use of the data
  • Provide recommendations and supporting documentation for new or proposed data standards, business rules and policy in alignment with the Enterprise Data Office
  • Advise on various projects and initiatives to ensure that any data related changes and dependencies are identified, communicated and managed to ensure adherence with the Enterprise Data Governance established standards
  • Coordinate with fellow Data Stewards in order to maintain consistent critical enterprise, operational, and analytical data
  • Ensure that data-centric activities, projects, and initiatives are aligned with the Enterprise Data Governance program and leverage applicable data standards, governance processes, and overall best practices
  • Own one or multiple domain perspectives in defining and continually evolving the roadmap for enterprise data governance based upon strategic business objectives, existing capabilities/programs, cultural considerations, and a general understanding of emerging technologies and governance models/techniques
  • Responsible for helping identify the need for domain data standards (and enterprise standards) based on strategic business objectives and the evolution of enterprise-level capabilities and analytical requirements



Required Knowledge and Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of experience working in Data Governance or Data Management; Strong data management background and understands data, how to ingest data, proper data use / consumption, data quality, and stewardship
  • Hands on experience with data governance / catalog tools such as Collibra or Informatica (preferred) and other lineage or data quality tools (such as Alation)
  • 3+ years functional experience working with and designing standards for data cataloging processes and tools
  • Ability to partner with both business and technical subject matter experts to ensure standardization of operational information and execution of enterprise-
  • Must have strong change management orientation, skills, and experience
  • Expertise in process design, reengineering, and requirements management and documentation methodologies
  • Highly skilled at facilitation and building consensus among diverse groups of stakeholders
  • Must be a self-starter
  • Demonstrated creative thinking and analytical skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to translate complex topics to any audience
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
