BELONG 🎈🏠
Belong is redefining what it means to rent, sell, buy, and live in a home by putting people first. We bring together hospitality and consumer real estate, setting a new standard for the industry. Backed by top-tier investors such as Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), GGV Capital, Battery Ventures, and Fifth Wall, Belong is building a transformative end-to-end experience to empower homeowners and residents alike. Our mission is to create authentic belonging experiences for those who own much-loved homes and those longing for that feeling.
The Opportunity: Join us at Belong as our Controller and play a pivotal role in shaping the financial strategy of a fast-growing technology company. This is more than just a job: it's an opportunity to influence and optimize the entire accounting function, guiding our company toward financial excellence and sustainable growth.
As the Controller, you will lead the accounting department across its various teams and responsibilities, ensuring financial reporting is complete and accurate. You will own the AR, AP, General Ledger, Month-End, Audits, Treasury, and Financial Reporting processes, to name a few. You will build and improve our processes, bettering both the speed and the quality of outputs. You will also serve as a strategic partner to our CFO and other leaders, supporting growth and decision-making with your deep financial insights. If you are a hands-on leader with a strong foundation in GAAP, proven experience managing external audits, and a passion for building scalable processes, we’d love to have you on board.
What You’ll Do:
- Lead the Accounting Function: Manage the entire accounting department, overseeing AR, AP, General Ledger, Month-End, Audits, Treasury, Financial Reporting, and all other related functions.
- Financial Reporting: Ensure that Belong’s financial reporting is complete and accurate and that our financial performance aligns with strategic goals.
- Process Improvement: Build and improve financial processes to increase both speed and quality of outputs. Implement systems to streamline and automate workflows.
- Strategic Partnership: Serve as a strategic partner to the CFO and other senior leaders to support business growth and decision-making with financial insights and analysis.
- Team Leadership: Hire, lead, mentor, and develop the accounting team, fostering a culture of high performance and accountability.
- Compliance & Audit: Manage all aspects of external audits, ensuring compliance with GAAP and other regulatory requirements. Maintain and establish strong internal controls.
- Financial Planning & Analysis: Support FP&A efforts, partnering with cross-functional teams to forecast, budget, and analyze financial performance.
- Internal Stakeholder Collaboration: Work closely with department leaders, providing financial guidance and support to help them understand fiscal implications and optimize resource allocation.
Who You Are:
- 8+ years of accounting experience, with at least 2 years in a Controller or Assistant Controller role leading an accounting function and managing a team.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required. A relevant master’s degree (e.g., MBA or Master’s in Accounting) is highly desirable.
- Professional Certification: CPA license required, with deep knowledge of GAAP and experience managing external audits.
- Proven track record working in dynamic environments. You know how to build processes from scratch, not just follow an established playbook.
- Strong leadership and mentoring abilities, with experience leading high-performing accounting teams.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to present complex financial information to various stakeholders, including non-financial leaders.
- You thrive in fast-paced environments and are always looking for ways to optimize and improve processes. You’re comfortable navigating ambiguity and shifting priorities.
- Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, NetSuite) and ERP systems, with advanced Excel skills.
What You'll Bring:
A positive, can-do attitude. You see challenges as opportunities for growth.
A desire to be deeply involved in developing and automating processes.
Attention to detail and an appreciation for the impact of even the smallest details on overall financial performance.
An ability to build professional relationships with leaders and staff across the company.
Familiarity with implementing financial systems in startup or growth-stage companies.
