Position Description:
Responsible for the installation and service of capital equipment for the paper, packaging, converting, and precast concrete industries.
Key Responsibilities/Complexities:
- Provide first-class support in troubleshooting problems with customer equipment at customer locations.
- Assist with onsite new machine installations and upgrades of existing equipment.
- Perform routine and/or emergency breakdown electrical service on company equipment; determine root cause of trouble; prepare report of findings and solutions to problem.
- Assist with training customer operation and maintenance personnel with emphasis on safe operation and establishing a zero-energy state during maintenance.
- Work from assembly drawings, wiring diagrams, machine manuals, technical procedures, and specifications to assist with new machine installations and/or upgrades; responsible for installations of various sections and complete machines and adjustments as necessary to ensure proper operation.
- Provide follow-up documentation, such as installation and service records, and/or trip reports/expenses, in accordance with time-sensitive deadlines.
- Assist with detecting defective/faulty materials or equipment; report unusual conditions to supervisor immediately.
- Other duties as assigned
- Maintain work area in a clean, orderly, and safe fashion.
Competencies:
- Basic knowledge of manufacturing methods, material application, and electrical design.
- The ability to read and utilize various gauges and precision measuring equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret schematics, prints, and assembly layouts.
- Ability to work in customer facilities and positively influence those relationships.
- Superior customer service skills.
- Strong problem-solving skills: ability to solve practical problems with a variety of variables in situations where limited standardization exists.
- Basic experience in PLC, servo motor controls, and HMI controls is preferred.
- Proficiency with MS Office
- Experience with automated schematics CAD system, and SolidWorks beneficial.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; some positions may require a proficiency in one or more languages other than English.
- Must be capable of multi-tasking various duties throughout the day and have a positive attitude with an ability to be versatile and flexible.
- Ability to achieve increased levels of competence with company-specific products as measured by increased level of certifications on the products.
Initiative/Ingenuity: Outstanding judgement, initiative, and ability to deal with complex factors not always easily evaluated and to make decisions based on conclusions for which there may be little precedent; highly technical engineering duties present constantly changing problems.
Supervisory/Responsibility: Works under general direction using policies and broad objectives with little functional guidance. Provide training of customer operation and maintenance personnel and supervise new installations for which team collaboration is required.
Work Environment: Field Service Technicians work in customer plants. Exposure to plant and new construction elements such as dirt, oil, grease, along with extended travel away from home.
Physical Demands: The employee may be required to stand, sit, climb, or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee may lift and/or move up to 50 pounds unassisted and greater than 50 pounds with assistance. Normal mental and visual attention is necessary to perform various duties.
Position Type: This is a regular, full-time position with the understanding that a regular workweek will require extended days and hours as needed to meet business needs. Anticipated field time in a year is about 75-80%. Holiday and weekend work is routine for Field Service Technicians.
Travel: Extensive travel within North America (USA, Canada, Mexico) region; opportunity for international travel if desired.
Required Education and Experience:
- Engineer: Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Industrial Engineering or Engineering Technology or Controls from an accredited school is required.
- Technician: A two-year post high school diploma/certificate in electro-mechanical technology (or similar associate/technical degree) OR a high school diploma and a minimum of 7 years relevant experience.
- Experience working with PLCs preferred.
- Knowledge of electrical, pneumatic, and controls systems along with a general understanding of material handling practices.
- Good mechanical aptitude desired.
- Excellent customer relations and interpersonal relations skills including a high degree of diplomacy.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Basic computer skills including Word and Excel.
The approximate pay range for this position is $65,000-100,000 annually. Please note that the pay range provided is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Final compensation may vary based on factors including but not limited to background, knowledge, skills, and abilities as well as geographic location of the position.
